Proportion Word Problems - Tricky Proportion / Rate Word Problem Challenge!
This product is the fifth in a series of six products that provide everything you need to introduce students to ratio, rate, and proportion concepts and ensure they understand and retain them! It addresses sixth, seventh, and eighth grade common core standards, but can also be used for advanced fifth grade students. Follow these instructions and use the materials step-by-step, and your students will soon have mastered how to use rates and proportions to solve complicated word problems! This and associated products can be used in two different ways, depending upon customer needs and preferences:

Ratio, Rate, and Proportion Unit Assessment
Each of the first four of these products contains a warm-up activity, a guided note-taking page, a math poetry page used to cement concepts, and a two-page illustrated worksheet. The final two sections are best used after ratios, rates, and proportions have been adequately addressed through these products or other materials.

This product, The Tricky Rate / Proportion Word Problem Challenge!, is a three-page worksheet composed not only of basic problems that can be solved using rates and proportions, but primarily of problems that contain a “trick” in them. Students might, for example, be provided the ratio of boys to girls and asked to find the number of students in the whole class, thereby requiring two steps to solve the problem. This activity will not only prepare students for a unit assessment on ratios, rates, and proportions, but also help them practice reading a problem thoroughly, completely thinking it through, and checking their work carefully.
