Are you ready for cold and flu season?

Help educate your students on situations, vocabulary, and figurative language related to the theme of wellness—and learn more about the cold versus the flu with the included reading passage!

Object: After players make a match or responds to one of the target areas, they can take a card from the shuffled pile of cold and germ cards. The first one to earn/collect all 6 “kick your cold” cards is the winner. But beware of the “germs on the loose” cards! (each card teaches a helpful tip for staying healthy and avoiding germs)

Included in this packet:

1 set of “Kick your cold” cards and 1 set of “Germs on the loose” cards . Make additional copies of each page. These cards can be used to play: Sniffle-time Problem Solving, Fit as a Fiddle Figurative Language and/or Stay Healthy Synonyms.

Card organizer—a place to keep the card piles for each category

Sniffle Time Problem Solving includes 16 scenarios related to being sick and how you would handle the situations by asking how you would feel (perspective-taking) and how you would solve the problem.

Fit as a fiddle figurative language includes 32 total cards of expressions (idioms, similes and metaphors) related to health/wellness. Match the expression with the correct meaning.

Stay Healthy Synonyms include 16 vocabulary cards. Match the word with the correct synonym. Pictures are self-correcting (i.e. tissue box matches up with tissue)

Includes two letter writing templates. Each contains three vocabulary words and one idiom from this unit to include in a letter to a friend who has been home with a cold and a personal journal entry.

Reading Passage—”The Common Cold Vs. The Flu---What’s the Difference?” read the passage with your students and use to complete the comprehension questions and vocabulary activity.

Compare/contrast The Cold vs the Flu using the included Venn diagram.

Identify Main idea/details, synonyms and comprehension questions related to the passage.

A collectible “speechsnacks” recipe card is included for homemade chicken soup! Check out the January 2013 speechsnacks archives at www.speechsnacks.com to find the complete post/photos.
