Description
Students will practice writing linear equations in slope-intercept given a point and slope or two points on the line with these relay races. There are two versions of each as students can be very competitive and might want another round!
Versions 1 & 2 (Point-Slope Relay Race): Place students in groups of 4 and assign them each a number 1 - 4. Place the worksheet on person #1's desk to start. Given a point and slope, they are to write the equation in slope-intercept form. Then, they pass the paper to Person #2. Person #2 takes the y-intercept from the previous answer, and substitutes it into their ordered pair, then writes the linear equation, then hands it to Person #3, etc.
Version 3 & 4 (Two Points Relay Race): Students are given two points and must write the equation in slope-intercept form. The rules work the same as they are to use the y-intercept of the last equation to substitute in and write the next linear equation.
I offered free homework passes to the group that brought me the paper with all four correct linear equations. This activity is great because they must collaborate together and rely on each other to make sure their answers are correct. My students LOVE the relay races!
This can also be used as independent work or as a warm-ups/exit tickets.
