Objective: You will carefully examine and think about the conflict between the British soldiers and the colonists by identifying and summarizing their different viewpoints.
This presentation takes the students on a journey that begins the morning after the massacre, introducing them to the sights & sounds of the incident, and asks the students to infer what happened. After the beginning slides, the teacher will teach about the Boston Massacre. The second part of the presentation allows the stud
All 27 weeks/lessons of Houghton Mifflin 5th grade weekly spelling words have been typed out, one lesson per page. Each lesson contains the "regular" words as well as the 4 or 5 challenge words. The spelling lessons include all 'regular' lessons as well as the theme unit review lessons. The only lessons that it does NOT include of the writing focus lessons (one per them). Each lesson is labeled with the lesson number & corresponding story.
These are perfect for teacher's reference or even as a
Teaching theme is often a struggle. Students struggle with thinking about a text abstractly. With this introductory power point, theme is made a little more concrete. There are a few different definitions of theme out there. For this presentation, theme is a general statement that can be applied to one's life. The theme topic is one word.
This power point consists of 11 slides, several of which contain teaching notes. After a brief introduction of theme, it compares theme statements to bill boa
After teaching the four types of sentences (declarative, interrogative, imperative, exclamatory), students usually require lots of practice until they have the four names and kinds memorized.
This power point can be used as independent or whole game practice/review or as a review game. To spice up the practice, all sentences used are some of the weird things that teachers have said (quotes taken from a blog-- blog info and website listed in the notes section). Each saying is quite funny, and i
I created this Spanish literature because I just received a non-English speaking student about 3 weeks ago, and I feel that while she is being immersed and learning English that way, she's missing out on being taught reading and reading skills. This study guide is to be used with the book "El ratoncito de la moto", the spanish version of "The Mouse and the Motorcycle". Due to the fact that I don't know Spanish, this literature guide is very simple, yet hopefully helpful. For every chapter, the s
This is a very basic worksheet that helps student be able to identify the simple subject & simple predicate. At the top of the worksheet, it gives four steps to break it down to help the student "walk through" the process. There are 11 problems. Each problem is a short sentence and the student is asked to write both the simple subject & predicate on given lines. There is a cute picture of a frog on each side of the worksheet.
This is another basic worksheet that reviews how to identify the simple subject & predicate in the sentence and then gives students a chance to practice it. There are 7 problems. Each problem is a short sentence and students are asked to write the simple subject & predicate on given lines.
These are the vocabulary words & definitions for the stories in Theme 1-3 in the Houghton Mifflin reading series. There are a total of 11 vocabulary lists, each labeled with the title of the story they correspond with. Each page also contains pictures that either go with the story or depict a specific word. Note that these are complete vocab lists, including all of the words denoted throughout the story in the yellow boxes (in the teacher's edition) and not just the vocab words in the student's
I used this bulletin board display for the first day of school to impress upon my students how important respect is to me, and how most every rule falls under respect. Using the well know song (R-E-S-P-E-C-T, this is what it means to me...) I helped me kids break down the big concept of respect to see what it really means, what it looks like.
This bulletin board display is all text. There are very big (400 font size) letters that spell respect, along with dash to seperate the letters, and then
This is a simple power point that consists of 10 slides plus cover and direction slides. Each slide has an idiom and then uses it in the sentence. This power point is intended to be used as a review, game, or quiz. The complexity of the idioms tends to increase throughout the power point.
Besides idioms, this power point also gives students the opportunity to practice using context clues.
This file is a pptx, the "newest version" of power point. It is editable, so feel free to edit to make it
This is a worksheet that focuses on input/output charts and 'finding the rule'. The first chart on the page gives the rule and asks students to complete the chart. The other questions on the worksheet (front & back) ask students to find the rule.
This worksheet could be appropriate for students outside of the range of grades 4-6 depending on your curriculum and the skill of your students.
This is a quick & easy form that I fill out for each child prior to parent-teacher conferences. It includes the child's name, a place for the child's strengths, areas of improvement are needed and a space for other comments. There is also a space to jot down any actions that were decided upon during the conference.
The form serves as a great organization tool to be adequately prepared for each conference, an outline to help guide you through the conference and a way to keep a record of what you
This is an easy to explain and easy to use resource to help students write a good summary. The graphic of the hand helps students remember what to put in the summary and serves as a reminder that they can't include every detail.
This is a worksheet that gives students practice with basic algebra concepts including solving for equations, input/output charts and writing an equation.
It may be appropriate for grades outside of the 4-6 range, depending on your curriculum & students
Distinguishing and identifying voiced & unvoiced (soft & hard) 'th' sounds can be difficult for students. This work sheet is student friendly with Super Mario images. I used this worksheet has a review. The bottom four questions are similar to word work questions that appear on state tests (at least MD).
This is a worksheet that provides practice for naming sentences: interrogative, imperative, exclamatory and declarative.
There are three different excersises:
-a sentence is given, then tell what kind
-a sentence with no punctuation is given &
they provide the punctuation
It could be used as classwork or homework to review or as a quiz to assess.
-matching each kind of sentence to its

This worksheet is for use with Chapter 29 of the novel Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper. In this chapter Melody’s mother is having a very heated phone conversation with Mr. Dimmings (Melody’s teacher). We only hear Mom’s side of the conversation. This worksheet asks students to infer Mr. Dimming’s side of the conversation based on Mr. Dimming’s character traits, past words and actions, and Mom’s follow-up responses.
Skills addressed:
Making inferences
Cause & effect
Analyzing characters
Determining theme is a skill that is a CC standard in 3rd-5th grade, and something that students often need reinforcement with. This graphic organizer provides students with practice and also serves as an outline for discussions and writing assignments.
Teacher notes included.
This sheet is perfect to gauge students' comprehension of an assigned chapter or to help students organize their thoughts in order to be prepared for and to participate in a group discussion.
It's basic enough to be used with any book and chapter your students are reading, or you can tweak it and make it more story/chapter specific.
