Students will use an area model for multiplying mixed numbers. They can use this as another method of multiplying mixed numbers and/or checking their work after using the algorithm. The first problem is set up as an example to demonstrate the method. Students can visually see why the algorithm of changing to improper and multiplying works. This lesson combines the game of "Scrabble," or more modernly, "Words with Friends" with the concepts of the food chain and food web. This is to help introduce slope for the first time based on the fact that students have previous knowledge of proportional relationships. It helps them to understand that slope is the same thing as unit rate, the rate of change, and constant of proportionality. They will then brainstorm where slope is used in real life. I used it in my 8th grade classroom to introduce slope. Previously in 7th grade, students have learned about proportional relationships and mastered the concept of unit rate.

Students will construct their own yard on graph paper. They will include three things: fence, swimming pool, and garden. They will use their own yard to calculate perimeter, area, and volume. They will then take the advertisement provided to calculate the cost for each other these items as well as a total cost to construct the entire yard. This is a weekly gradebook that can help keep track of Attendance (Att.), Homework (HW), and daily Participation (Part.). It makes it easy to quickly record whether students are absent/tardy as well as if they have their homework for the day. In addition, it provides a place to easily record daily participation points. At the end of the week, it is simple to transfer these records to your permanent file. Then, you can print a new one off for the next week.
