Multiplying Mixed Numbers Using an Area Model

Created by

Students will use an area model for multiplying mixed numbers. They can use this as another method of multiplying mixed numbers and/or checking their work after using the algorithm. The first problem is set up as an example to demonstrate the method. Students can visually see why the algorithm of changing to improper and multiplying works. This is a word document so you can adapt it to meet the needs of your students. I am using this with my 7th grade students as a review. It could be used

This lesson combines the game of "Scrabble," or more modernly, "Words with Friends" with the concepts of the food chain and food web. Students have to read a food web of a particular biome in order to build food chains. Students earn points for each card played, but only if they can correctly identify it to the other players. This is a very engaging activity and the kids love it! It allows the students to understand and apply the concepts of food chains and food webs. Most importantly, the

Introduction to Slope - Relating Proportional Relationships

This is to help introduce slope for the first time based on the fact that students have previous knowledge of proportional relationships. It helps them to understand that slope is the same thing as unit rate, the rate of change, and constant of proportionality. They will then brainstorm where slope is used in real life. I used it in my 8th grade classroom to introduce slope. Previously in 7th grade, students have learned about proportional relationships and mastered the concept of unit rate.

Students will construct their own yard on graph paper. They will include three things: fence, swimming pool, and garden. They will use their own yard to calculate perimeter, area, and volume. They will then take the advertisement provided to calculate the cost for each other these items as well as a total cost to construct the entire yard. This applies their knowledge of perimeter, area, and volume in a real-world context. Includes a full lesson plan, including differentiation and culturall

This is a weekly gradebook that can help keep track of Attendance (Att.), Homework (HW), and daily Participation (Part.). It makes it easy to quickly record whether students are absent/tardy as well as if they have their homework for the day. In addition, it provides a place to easily record daily participation points. At the end of the week, it is simple to transfer these records to your permanent file. Then, you can print a new one off for the next week.

Discovering Slope Intercept Form

Students apply previous knowledge of proportional relationships (graphs, tables, equations) to non proportional scenarios. They will have to create a table, graph, and equation and describe how it differs from previous material they have learned. Students will also describe the term intercept and use that to apply what x and y intercept may mean. They will have to describe where the different components of their equation appears on the graph. They will have to look again at their equation an
