Lopez Land Learners (TpT Seller) re: 5th Grade CCSS: NBT.7: Math Tasks, Exit Tickets, I Cans

Just an FYI.. your front cover says 5.NBT.1 but underneath it says Fourth Grade Common Core :-)

Emilee L.

I recently purchased both the 5.MD.5 tasks bundle and the 5.MD.1-5 bundle...I thought it was supposed to have line plot activities- but there aren't any. :( Am I missing something? Please let me know thank you.

Create-Abilities (TpT Seller)

Which bundle did you buy? The line plot activities correlate with the CCSS 5.MD.2. If you bought the complete bundle, there should be math tasks, exit tickets, and I cans that cover line plots.

Heather Bingham (TpT Seller) re: 3rd Grade Common Core MD.3: Graphs: Math Tasks, Exit Tickets, I Cans

Cassie - hi friend! How do you introduce the tasks to your students with the idea that some of the information is missing. I have done tasks like this before, but I waited until students figured out what was missing and then gave them what was missing. Why did you decide to not give it to them, vs wait until they realized it and then give it to them?

Create-Abilities (TpT Seller)

Hi Heather! I introduce them at first with lots of scaffolding. The very first task that we did, I walked them through as I did a "think-aloud". I told them how I would go about it, what I noticed was missing etc. Then we did one all together as a class. I usually did two or three altogether (depending on the needs of the class) and that seemed to help get them in the mindset for tasks. Then before the next ten or so tasks I would read the task to them and ask them guiding questions to help them see on their own what was missing and what they needed to find. Does that make sense? Then, one on one with the groups, I could give a little more direction to those students who needed it. Did you download my free math task explanations? That might help! Good to hear from you!

I think there's some mix-up in the 3rd Grade Fractions unit 3.NF.1-3, instead of the explanations, it just repeats standard 3.NF.3 again...can you include the explanations?

Thank you for pointing it out to me! A couple of the files were duplicated. It's now been fixed and you can redownload it!

Fabienne F. re: 3rd Grade CCSS L.4: Unknown Words: Exit Tickets, I Cans and Assessment

Does this correlate with the ELA or ELD CCSS #4? For subjects it shows ELD, but I am not finding a direct correlation with ELD CCSS? Thank you!

Create-Abilities (TpT Seller)

Thanks for your question! It correlates to ELA CCSS #4. It's listed as EFL, ESL, ELD because this is a good product for ESL students and I have used it with them in the classroom. If there was a way to only list it as ESL I would do that to lessen confusion! :)

Buyer re: Place Value Math Tasks! 1st grade NBT.1-6! CCSS!!

Is there a preassessment included?

LaShonne W. re: 5.NF.4: Multiplying Fractions: Math Tasks, Exit Tickets, I Cans CCSS!!

Hi, after checking the answers to the exit tickets on 5NF4, I noticed that in each problem the whole number was multiplied by the whole number and then the fractions were multiplied by each other which yields an incorrect answer. I appreciate all the hard work, but the answer keys are incorrect. 4 1/8 should be turned into an improper fraction - 33/8 before multiplying it by an improper fraction for 8 4/7 which is 60/7. Or you can partial products by multiplying 4 x 1/8 plus 4 x 4/7 plus 8 x 4 plus 8 X 1/8. Also, #3 on that page there is a really high product for an exit ticket, since the product is 2,366 the students would have a very large division problem for an exit ticket which is not quite assessing the standard. Thanks again for all the hard work.

I can work on that tonight! I only have space to add one maybe two questions. Is that what you were thinking?

Brandy S. re: 5.NF.1-7: Fractions: Formative Assessments CCSS!!

Cassie,

I'm wondering if you'd be willing to do an update to this and add to it decimals divided by decimals. I know that I could go in and add decimals, but then I'd need to change answer keys and everything. Right now it's just decimals divided by whole numbers, but we have to do both.

Thanks,

Brandy

I am a fan of yours! I previewed this product and purchased it. I noticed on the teacher directions page, you comment about there being some "guiding questions"... I don't see any. I was hoping that when I purchased it, there would be more directions to give the students in completing the zoo fences activity. Hi! I had a question about all of the 1st grade standards. I read in another question that you are working on getting the rest of the standards together. I absolutely love how you have put them all together. Is there a way to bundle them all together to make a complete 1st grade math standards bundle? (Including all OA, NBT, etc.)

Thank you!

On the Farmer Fred task, the word weighs has an extra letter in it (weights). Also, are there answer keys for the tasks. I am unclear about using the standard to solve the problem on Farmer Fred?

Create-Abilities (TpT Seller)

Hi! Thanks for pointing that out! I'll fix it tonight and upload the file again so you can download it without the mistake! There are no answer keys to tasks because they can be so open-ended. Have you downloaded my Free Math Task Explanations? It can be found here: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Math-Tasks-Explanations-FREE-756382.

For the Farmer Fred task, students will be multiplying fractions to find the area of the pen (5.NF.4b). They know that it is 10 1/2 feet wide but need to reasonably estimate how long it would be. They need to remember to give each pig at least 6 1/2 feet of space. This task involves them estimating two things: 1. the number of pigs Farmer Fred has, and 2. how long the pen needs to be. From there, they will multiply the side lengths to determine the total area. This fits the standard whether they determine the length to be a whole number or a fraction. Does this make sense? If not, email me back and I can help clarify.

Thanks!

Victoria H. re: Place Value Exit Tickets for 5th grade! Common Core aligned!!

Hi, I just purchased your Exit Tickets for 5th grade and I love it. However, I noticed that one of 5.NBT.6 story problems (page 74 and 75) has an incorrect answer. I think the wording of what the question is asking doesn't match the multiple choice answers. The answer shows how many vans are needed not how many students are on the last trip. I just wanted to let you know. : )

would you also consider making it with facts to 18 since that is our grade level goal, or including a blank fact page (or an editable one)? Thanks

Create-Abilities (TpT Seller)

Absolutely! What exactly did you have in mind? I'm assuming you mean something like 18 + 1, 18 + 2 etc. How high up were you thinking?

Brandy S.

A lot cheaper, so thanks! ;) It looks like a fabulous resource and it seems like you're creating some for each of the domains. I noticed you already have 5th OA done too. I'm really excited about these resources. I noticed you teach in Utah. I do too, Davis County. As you know we don't have a CommonCore textbook so having help like this is such a timesaver and lifesaver! So glad there are people like you out there who can put together quality products like this.

Create-Abilities (TpT Seller)

A fellow Utahn! Nice! That is exactly why I started creating products! We didn't have a textbook (or basically any other materials) and I wanted to do it right. I am almost done with the NF domain and will start on MD soon!

I am very interested in your 5th Grade CCSS: NBT.1-7: Math Tasks, Exit Tickets, I Cans bundle. I was just wondering is this the full resources of what I would get if I bought everything individually or is it actually a light version of those different items?

Hmm, good question. Let me think on it and I will talk to my team tomorrow and see if they have any ideas. I really love to use math learning games at least once a week with my students. We kind of look at it as a celebration for all the hard work we've done during the week doing other things and learning methods. I would definitely like to see something with different operations in a game like you did for the connect four type resource.

Create-Abilities (TpT Seller)

Okay that sounds like a plan. I'm already thinking things like multiplying fractions by whole numbers (or dividing), and a few others let me know what your team thinks.

Brandy S. re: Connect Five! 1 + 1 Digit Addition Fact Fluency Game 0-10!!

Would you consider making a version of this game for older grade students? I teach 5th graders and although this is something I had them practice at the beginning of the year, I'd love to see a verson I can use with other math units throughout the year.

Buyer re: Connect Five! 1 + 1 Digit Addition Fact Fluency Game 0-10!!

How do the students play?

Create-Abilities (TpT Seller)

Thank you for asking! This shows me I need to clarify in the product description! Students take turns picking a question to answer. If they get the answer correct, they get to place their marker on that square. If they get it incorrect, they don't get to place a marker and it is the other players turn to choose where to go. The students are trying to get five markers (going any way) in a row. If they can't get five in a row, then the person with the most markers on the board total wins. Did that help?

Do you mind telling me how you use the math tasks on a weekly basis? I read your math task explanation, but I am curious....you say you do about one a week? I noticed you include 5 tasks in each of your sets (which is wonderful), but you usually just pick one of those per week to do? Just would like to see how these are used on a weekly basis.

Thanks so much,

I don't mind at all! I actually have a couple blog posts on how I do it that can be found here:

http://www.create-abilities.blogspot.com/2013/10/math-task-explanation-part-1.html

(It's a three part series).

I do tasks once a week. What I started to do at the end of the year, when the kids were used to tasks, was print one task on the front and another on the back for early finishers to work on. I made five per set because sometimes a concept would take us longer and I wanted tasks to tie in to what we were covering in class. Also, there are different levels of difficulty with the tasks and so depending upon your class, one might be better over the others. Does that make sense?

Let me know if you have more questions! Sometimes I think I am being clear and am actually being more confusing!

Do you have a rough idea of when all of the Grade 5 Math exit tickets will be complete? I would like to purchase the set, but so far I only see a portion. I could maybe buy now and take delivery as you finish if that is an option...trying to get my principal to pay for these and don't want to hit him up multiple times.

Create-Abilities (TpT Seller)

It will probably take me a few months to finish. But knowing that you are waiting for it, I could push it up in front of my other products. Create-Abilities (TpT Seller)

Yes! This is an option!! However, there is a little snag. I am only completely finished with the 3rd and 4th grade. The others are about 1/5 of the way done. So we have a couple of options. First, you can wait until I complete them all and then purchase them or second, you could pay for them up front with a contract that I would send the others as I finish them. It will take one to two months to complete everything. What works best for you?

Thanks!

Cassie

Christy Cox (TpT Seller) re: 3rd Grade Common Core MD.3: Graphs: Math Tasks, Exit Tickets, I Cans

I think I must not be able to download some pictures or some information is missing from my critical thinking tasks. On the alphabet letter activity I do not see the results (or are my students supposed to complete that)? None of the math tasks have enough information or data to actually do a graph. Am I missing something?

Create-Abilities (TpT Seller)

You aren't missing anything at all! These tasks are created with some of the information missing. The common core wants students to be deep, independent thinkers. It also wants them to make reasonable estimates and check the reasonableness of their answers. Because of this, the students need to estimate or choose some of the data needed. Here is a link to my free download on math task explanations. Let me know if you have any more questions!

re: Do you have these Math Tasks/Exit Tickets/I Cans bundled for 5th grade like the 4th grade set?

You asked when I needed the bundled Exit Tickets, etc by...

This is our first year implementing common core and I need all the help I can get. A 4th grade friend has the Exit Tickets and got them at the bundled price. I would love to do that also whenever they are available. I think they would be a big help. She is using hers for exit tickets and daily graded work also. She said that this one document has been a life saver because she can see sample questions from someone who has taught CCSS first hand. I will keep checking and purchase when the bundle is available! Thanks :)

I'll will work as hard as I can on them!!! I COMPLETELY understand the frustration at trying to get CCSS resources! We got a new math book that said it was aligned and it wasn't! So I had to start making my own stuff! I've been lucky enough to be able to work for my state creating/presenting the CCSS so it really helped me pull things together! I'll get started right away!!

Thanks,

Cassie

Can you make tasks and exit cards for the remainder of the 1st grade standards? I would love to buy them!!

Create-Abilities (TpT Seller)

I'm working on it! I'm trying to get them done as fast as possible. Are you following me? If you are you will get an email when it's posted.

Thanks!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have taught for five years. I taught fifth grade for a year, a third-fourth split and straight third for the other years. Before I received my teaching license I worked with a preschool and an afterschool program that served Title 1 students K-6. I have been selected by my district to lead professional developments on the language arts and math common core. There, I trained teachers of all ranges in the new standards.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe in using Whole Brain Teaching. It actively encourages students to participate in a fun, yet controlled, manner. Students learn more when they are speaking, explaining, and showing all at the same time.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I received my Master's degree in Instructional Design and Teacher of the Year award from my school district.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I received my Bachelors from the University of Utah. While there, also received my English as a Second Language (ESL) endorsement. Two years later I graduated with my Masters of Education, Instrucational Design.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I love what I do! I find it thrilling to come to work everyday and help my students learn and grow. I love finding new and exciting ways to teach my students that are researched based and tied to the common core.
