I believe that my teaching style is a mixture between progressivism and social reconstructionism, both of which come under the larger philosophical umbrella of contemporary educational philosophies. My class is a hands-on discovery process where participation is a must. My students utilize various forms of technology to explore basic concepts and to explore various science career paths.
I am currently teaching Biology, Chemistry and Earth Science to 9-12 grade students in a high needs urban high school. This year to help address our low proficiency and high drop out rates, I am implementing AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) strategies in my classroom. I am teaching my students to utilize Cornell Notes as well the Interactive Notebook.
AVID targets students in the academic middle - B, C, and even D students - who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. With the guidance of caring teachers, the AVID strategies may help these students become the first member of their family to attend college.
I also have a class website, where students can access powerpoint slides, assignments, quizzes & tests, and even post comments or questions.
