I purchased this unit (didn't notice the "free" one) to determine if it might be something we could incorporate into our K classrooms for Tier 1 intervention. We have now purchased the year-long bundle. As an SLP, we are going to work with our Reading Specialist next year to push in to classrooms. My only suggestion might be to include quick pre-, mid-year, and post- benchmark assessment forms. That would be wonderful, and if you do include this at some point, I'd love to be informed. Thank you.

We are planning another 12 months worth of lessons, so if schools implemented the Two Peas PA curriculum in K and 1st, students could get one 12 month set in K and another 12 month set with new titles in 1st grade. We have also written a Back to School Kevin Henkes pack and will be doing more topic (non-month) bundles. We are almost finished with our PA assessment, that will be free.

The books are definitely appropriate for 2nd grade...in fact, your students could probably read most of the books...they are mostly in the 2nd grade reading comprehension band, but in the K/1 listening comprehension band. We are developing another 12 months right now with more book selections and author study and topic bundles.

I have purchased the December through April bundles and love them. I see such a dramatic improvement in their phonemic awareness skills and it is such an easy way to teach so many standards. I came on to purchase the May bundle and saw that you now have a year-long bundle. I looked at some of the titles and want the whole year so that I can interchange lessons to line-up with our themes. Would it be possible to get a discount or pro-rate the remaining months? Just a thought.

No question, you two are brilliant . I teach kindergarten in Missouri and our district uses Pathways to Reading a phonics and phonemic awareness based reading program. Needless to say I have seen the success of ensuring we work on the phonemic awareness component. kudos to both of you... I love how you tied a literature selection to each week's lessons...we just have a six day cycle of games and activities with given word groups---I see your way as more meaningful for the kiddos--and that usually means they are motivated to stay engaged.

In your description, I saw that you said "check the last page of the preview for info about using this with older students", but I didn't see it in the preview. I did read that you said the benefits have not been proven for older students, but I am addressing K/1st skills with some of my 4th/5th graders, so I feel this would be appropriate and very beneficial. I am going to see if I can purchase a used copy for next year. I am seeing improvement in my students as I do the activities. Hi Jessica! The 16 PA skills we outline in the free "Too Many Toys" lesson (which lasts one week long and takes students through all 16 skills) could be considered a S&S. These 16 skills are practiced and repeated every week for 40 weeks. The only things that change are the book titles and words themselves for each skill area that come from the book itself. Hope that helps.

Hi Julie!
You're right about having difficulty opening ZIP files on an iPad, I can't either. So, what I would do is purchase and download the zipped bundle on a home computer or laptop computer, save it somewhere, like your desktop. Here, you have two options...save it Dropbox (a free account if you don't have one) and then open it in the Dropbox app on your iPad. OR instead of using Dropbox, compose an email to yourself, attach the bundle to the email and make sure you send it to the email address you access from your iPad. Then open the email on your iPad and when you click on the attachment, tell your iPad that you want to open it in iBooks when prompted. I hope that helps and if it doesn't, let me know and you can call me and I'll walk you through it over the phone. Take care!

You're right about having difficulty opening ZIP files on an iPad, I can't either. So, what I would do is purchase and download the zipped bundle on a home computer or laptop computer, save it somewhere, like your desktop. Here, you have two options...save it Dropbox (a free account if you don't have one) and then open it in the Dropbox app on your iPad. OR instead of using Dropbox, compose an email to yourself, attach the bundle to the email and make sure you send it to the email address you access from your iPad. Then open the email on your iPad and when you click on the attachment, tell your iPad that you want to open it in iBooks when prompted. I hope that helps and if it doesn't, let me know and you can call me and I'll walk you through it over the phone. Take care!

Thank you for your quick response. I was already aware of the availability of the book for sale online--the price of which pretty much equals the bundle, even for the 1.99 book (shipping included). I thoroughly searched both my school library and regional library catalogs and wasn't able to find it. In addition, none of my colleagues had it either--which prompted the simply curious inquiry to whether or not alternate titles were available. Again, thank you for the response.

I talked to my partner, Kathi about this today, an at this point, we are not offering alternates, primarily because the book is available at www.amazon.com for $5.35 and at www.barnesandnoble.com for the used price of $1.99. We made books selections very carefully based a number of criteria....if a book was "out of print" we did not use it. However, this book in not out-of-print, in fact, it was published in 2010. The order of books really doesn't matter, we just tried to correlate them to themes and units that we know teachers teach in certain months...but certainly rearrange the order to meet your needs.

When I'm teaching this whole group to Kinders, and I hear someone say it incorrectly (since they usually all respond chorally) I correct right after I hear it said incorrectly, so if I say /apple/ and some children say /a/ /p/ /l/, but one or some of them say, /a/ /pl/, I would say, "Yes (or Good), the correct reponse is /a/ /p/ /l/" and keep moving.

We used to use MH before we developed the Two Peas PA curriculum, and up to that point, MH was the best PA available. We think ours is better because it's literature based and 100% aligned to the K and 1st grade phonological awareness skills in the Foundational Literacy strand of the Common Core. If you using it with 5th graders, definitely add the phonics element at the same time *with* the PA instruction for my "stick."

I have one more question. I am using this with my PK4 boy who is a mid kindergarten reader. He responds with nonsense ryhming words about 1/2 the time. I echo his word and offer a real word ryhme too. Is this ok or this there a better way to get a real word? Or is it fine for his age?
I also use this with my after school handwriting tutoring for Kinder & 1st. We use the wood sticks from Mat Man to tap out the syallables in the words. But they usually come up with real word ryhmes.

Hi! Generating nonsense words but still words that rhyme is ok for your child's age, this shows me that he understands what rhyming means, but that he doesn't have enough experience with language and words to know the difference from real words and non-real words...two different skills....rhyme sense and word sense. I hope this helps. When he generates the nonsense words, too, like when he says bim, as rhyming with swim for example, you can say, "Bim, what's that? or What's a bim?"

We do have plans to create another 12-month set so Kinder and 1st grade would have and use different sets. However, there are no phonological awareness or phonemic awareness skills identified in the 2nd grade Common Core Foundational Skills Strand for ELA. Yes! We'll actually have September and April up by tonight! And we are writing the rest of the months as fast as we can. We should have all months up by this April. Then, we are going to work on another complete set, so for example, Kindergarten would use one set and 1st grade would use a different set. We are also writing some author set bundles.

I would love to see a chart for weekly progress monitoring to go with these bundles. I am starting to see a little growth. Since I am working one to one, it is easy to see which activities are easy and which ones are difficult. My two students are having the most difficulty with the four words - which one is not like the other. I have been repeating the same set until they can determine the odd word. Any suggestions for strengthening the auditory memory?

Do you have any other stories for each month that you could supplement some of the stories with? For example, I am not really supposed to read gingerbready baby in my kindergarten class because at our school the grade 1's use that book as part of their language arts curriculum, so I wouldn't be able to use that book in December. Just thought I would check. No worries if you don't as I can understand why.

When we are done creating one year's worth of curriculum, we will creating another set (one year) because ideally we would want students exposed to this in Kindergarten and 1st grade, so we think they should have different titles each year. We understand your situation and although we feel that kids would not be "harmed" by hearing a book one time the previous year (in order to actually do something else with it), we get it. We also plan to create seasonal and Author bundles so you certainly supplement with any of those. Are you saying you'd like to see those now or can it wait until we have a year done? If you are going to make an August pack, any Summer, ocean, back-to-school themed books would be great (e.g. Pete the Cat, Chrysanthemum, The Kissing Hand, If You Take A Mouse to School, How I spent my Summer Vacation, Greetings From Sandy Beach etc). Really though, I'm discovering great new books through these packs so I'm happy to order any books that you decide to include.

I know I'm biased....but this is SO easy to implement and I know from personal experience and from what other teachers have said so far...KIDS LOVE IT...and they don't even know how good it is for their reading development. If you tell me when your school year starts in January, I'll have the September pack ready, and I'll do August after that. The September titles will be The Kissing Hand, If I Became a Pirate (in the US, Sep. 19 is Talk Like a Pirate Day), It's Back to School We Go: First Day Stories from Around the World (this is non-fiction), and Late for School. August titles will be A Bad Case of Stripes, Where the Wild Things Are, Chicka-Chicka Boom Boom and Hungry, Hungry Sharks (this is non-fiction).

I am a K-12 reading specialist as well, :-). As you will read in our free sample, reading research indicates that if phonological awareness isn't learned by 2nd grade, trying to teach it to 3rd-5th grade is "too little too late" since PA skills are pre-reading strategies. So, we will not be creating lessons for students older than 2nd grade. You might check out the Michael Heggerty Curriculum if you insist on teaching it to 5th graders, but again, Michael Heggerty's Phonemic Awareness curriculum is only made and sold for Kindergarten and first grade...the developmental window for phonological awareness.

Even though they are second graders, I am using these fabulous sets with two classified boys with severe ADHD as well as other issues. Despite many, many interventions since kindergarten, they are having difficulty with all aspects of reading. I am looking to see if you have a recording sheet or could recommend how to set one up.
