A fun project that takes a modern twist on an "old" topic! After studying Transcendentalism and its principles (see my American Transcendentalism Notes) students embark on a project in which they look for transcendental thought in modern culture. This three part project has them look for transcendentalism in 1) comics 2) music 3) artwork This project was a HUGE success in my class and I even had once student tell me he has become much more reflective because it. Can't beat feedback like tha

With so many novels coming out as movies, students are starting to read more! Students often find they like the novel more because producers just can't pack everything into the movie. This project forces students to take a deeper look in to the film version of a novel (after completing the novel). Students will study cinematic terms and effects in a "close reading" style. This project would be PERFECT for any ELA class even though I have used it in my Literature through Film elective. This

Students really enjoy picking their "interesting" person. This product os easy to adapt for many different grade levels. Included is a research guide that students use to keep them on track. Students will research the basics and beyond. They will be forced to consult different sources as well. Teachers, you can use this in many different ways. I first familiarize my students with the many aspects of research (plagiarism, direct quotes, paraphrase, summaries, works cite page....the list goes

My students absolutley loved this summative assessment project! Based on Alexander Supertramp's journey from "Into the Wild", the students create and take their own transcendental journey to any place of their choice--as long as it has a transcendental philosophy behind it. You do NOT need to have read "Into the Wild" but students will need to be familar with transcendentalism. Check out my American transcendentalism notes which are listed separately. Ready to print PDF. 2-3 Day assignment

Included in this product is 1) an assignment description hand out 2) a list of allusions from the novel 3) a note taking template (so students can take notes on the other allusions presented) and 4) A rubric I started this lesson with a lesson on allusions (not included) which segued into this assignment. My students worked with a part

Experience

I am entering my seventh year as a high school English teacher. I have taught all grades and all levels. I have also taught elective courses in short story and film and literature. I am experience in both Mac and PC programs. I have also worked with Photoshop and InDesign quite a bit.

Teaching style

I look at every lesson, every day and every activity as a teachable moment. I Common Core align everything that I possibly can but sometimes there are things that students just need to know (and who cares what it aligns with?!).

Awards & shining teacher moments

Well, none to date but I did go through a very rigorous interview process to obtain the job I have. I consider it honor to have been the chosen one!

My own education history

I have a BA in English and a M.Ed. in Education from Wright State University.
