Teaching style

For English language learners I believe in creating lessons that follow the SIOP framework with a particular emphasis on comprehensible input and output as outlined by Stephen Krashen. All of my lessons strive to include a focus on new language acquisition in the form of meaningful engagement in the areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. My objective is to create purposeful language learning experiences for my students by following the teaching and learning cycle and continually improving my craft as a teacher.

Awards & shining teacher moments

*Employee of the Month *Mentor Teacher to Student Teachers and Interns *Graduated Summa Cum Laude, South Dakota State University Graduate program *Awarded numerous grants for my classroom and school

My own education history

Bachelor's Degree (2004) Concordia College Moorhead, MN Elementary Education Graduated with Highest Honors, Education Department Master's Degree (2012) South Dakota State University Brookings, SD Elementary Education Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in English as a New Language Graduated Summa Cum Laude, Top of my class (2012 graduates)

Additional biographical information

Above all, I believe in establishing a community of respect and safety that lowers the affective filter for English language learners. I utilize an ethnographic approach to learning more about my students and families so I can meet their needs and get to know them not just as students and parents but as individuals. I often find I learn much more from them than they do from me as their teacher.
