Robyn Rimler

For the past five years, I gained experience as both an elementary and middle school educator in the New Jersey Public School System. In addition to scaffolding my students academically, socially and emotionally, my professional contributions extended beyond the classroom walls. Seeking extensive professional development, conducting individualized tutoring sessions, coordinating school events, presenting at workshops, and collaborating with faculty and administration to design, integrate, and differentiate curriculum name just some of the ways that I explored the depths of my position. Teaching for me was far from the “9 to 3/ Summers Free” career that those outside of the world of education so often envision. It was a calling; a chance to make an impact on those who will be impacting our tomorrows. I relished the opportunity to get to know each of my students as a unique individual with unique talents, affinities, struggles, and needs. Many of my students remained a part of my life, through ongoing communication, even when our ten months together was through.

When I was in 6th grade, I fell in love for the first time. No, not the romantic kind, but I fell in love with words, thanks to one inspirational teacher. As a “tweenage” girl, reading and writing became my passions. Immersing myself in literature and experiencing the power of the pen allowed me to develop my own voice and identity, as well as to open a portal out into the world beyond my own scope. My passion for literacy is something I have embraced through adulthood. Throughout my own career as an educator, it was always my mission to ignite this fierce brand of passion in my students; whether it be aimed towards the language arts, the sciences, technology, or a fusion of several different content areas. In the classroom, I endeavored to inspire my students to develop a lifetime love of learning. My teaching philosophy lie deeply grounded in the belief that children learn best when the content is "a mirror in and a window out"; knowledge is gained when material is taught in an authentic way that connects to the learners lives, yet provides them with insights on the world beyond their scope.

My goal is to design lessons that engage, entice, and elicit curiosity and exploration. I aim to create materials that will reach the diverse population of learners in every classroom and lead to success and confidence for all. With a first-person understanding of how difficult and demanding the role of teacher can be, I hope to put out materials that are relevant, easy to apply, and allow teachers enough room to take ownership!
