For several years now I have been using this set of worksheets with my lower level and upper level high school science courses in order to help them understand how to read a journal article. A great activity for those not sure how to use textbooks. I have created a textbook scavenger hunt worksheet so my students can get used to using the larger high school science textbooks. Helps them find and use the index, glossary and Table of contents. Helps them identify extra sections added to the book. In this Hands-on Lab assignment, the students are put in the situation of being textbook writers who must include a "Timeline of Life" in their science textbook. They are given specific direction using adding machine paper rolls and colored pencils. A great little worksheet for drilling students on the symbols for various elements. Students are given a list of symbols and a list of the elements on the same page. Most of my freshmen students, without using their Periodic Tables, can figure out 95% of the symbols. I usually give this worksheet at the beginning of the Chemistry unit as a way of showing them that it is not that hard to figure them out.
