Money Word Problems (Freda's Fruit) (CC.2.MD.8) - This money word problems resource includes 3 sets of 20 money word problems task cards that can be used for small group, centers, morning warm-up, normal classroom work or even as an assessment. They are intended to help students learn how to count and add money. The students then have to add up the various items of fruit and solve for how much it would cost to purchase those items.

Money Word Problems Description

There are 3 sets of cards included in this packet (Sets A – B – C). The sets are organized by difficulty level and each set contains 20 cards.

Set A (Easy) – Every fruit item in this set is priced under $1. Additionally, each word problem uses only combinations whose sum is less than $1. This set is intended to introduce students to the concept while keeping the addition simple.

Set B (Medium) – This set is intended to build upon the skills learned in Set A. Fruit in this set is priced at whole dollars or cents. Word problems use a combination of dollars and cents.

Set C (Hard) – This set further expands the skills learned in sets A and B. It includes fruit priced at a mixture of dollars and cents. The math may be challenging when students are required to change and convert to dollar amounts during the addition part of the problem. Solutions over 99¢ are written with the dollar sign and decimal format ($2.10).

Money response worksheets are included with each set of cards. These are provided for convenience only. As the word problems become more difficult, your students may need more room on the paper to solve each problem. Scratch paper can be used with the final answer written on the response worksheets if desired. The use of the worksheets is completely optional.

These money card sets can be used for small group, centers, morning warm-up, normal classroom work or even as an assessment. Using play money for the students to count or having the students draw the dollars and cents represented in each word problem/solution are additional options that can be used to expand learning and enhance this resource. Get creative! We would suggest printing everything in color, laminating and then cutting so that you can use this one resource for years.

Common Core (Money Related)
