Description

Interoception (our awareness of internal body sensations), can be a tricky topic to cover. This sensory system plays an important role in emotional regulation, as it allows little ones to detect and respond to the internal sensations experienced during different feelings. This includes our heart pounding when we're scared, our body feeling hot when we're angry, and more!

This packet was created to provide information on this sensory system, a variety of exercises to practice interoceptive awareness with your little one, along with several entertaining activities to engage this system + work on what coping skills can support our body through different emotions.

This resource is able to be used with children who are familiar with the Zones of Self Regulation program, along with children who are not familiar with the curriculum. A variety of wording/versions are offered in this resource.

Inside, you'll find:

  • TWO pg Parent-Friendly Handout: What is interoception? What are some signs of difficulty if a child has decreased interoceptive awareness? What are some activities and considerations when addressing this system?

  • Investigator Interoception Activity: Crack the case by studying the "body clues," and figuring out which "feelings folder" you might find them in! Then, practice + trial coping skills (9 pre-written coping skills included, +BONUS page of blank coping skills templates to write your own!) that will support you through each feeling (or zone). Prep directions and recommended set-up instructions included.

  • TWO No-Prep Activities: Where I Feel My Feelings handout (coloring/labeling activity) and How I Feel My Feelings handout (coloring/sorting activity).
