Description
This text set was created to help students 1) become increasingly familiar with challenging primary sources; 2) practice informational text reading skills; 3) preview or review topics covered in class. This set includes an excerpt of John Smith's "A Map of Virginia", the Mayflower Compact, SWP No. 094 Rebecca Nurse Executed July 19, 1692, Quaker Elizabeth Sandwith Drinker diary, "A Breife Declaration of the Plantation of Virginia" (1624), Letter of Edward Winslow, 11 December 1621, "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" by Linda Brent, "The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano", and John Smith and Powahatan Exchange Views, 1608. Three questions are included for each of the texts which includes knowledge of previous events in history, analyzing word and sentence choice, and comprehending the content of the text which makes this a great set to use in a Social Studies classroom to support ELA skills or to use in an English Language Arts class to support SS concepts. Additionally, each text set also has a modified version. The modified version is indicated by a white "M" at the top of the page. The text is the same, but the questions differ slightly by including more context for students who may find some of the complex text a bit out of reach. This would be great to use with students who need a variety of accommodations.
