Description
Adult ESL grammar students discover how possessive nouns work in this collaborative linguistic investigation. Working in small groups, they analyze 52 (or fewer…it’s up to you) example cards, identify patterns, and build the rules themselves instead of receiving a grammar lecture.
Discovery-based learning puts your students in control of their own understanding. When they figure out the rules through analysis and discussion, they retain them better and can apply them confidently in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, no matter what their goals are for learning English.
WHAT'S INSIDE this 18-page PDF:
- ✅ teacher pages with clear instructions and implementation tips
- ✅ 52 possessive noun cards for small-group analysis and pattern discovery
- ✅ 8 heading cards + activity label and instruction cards to guide and organize the investigation
- ✅ worksheet for students to articulate the rules and practice applying them in writing
HOW TO USE THIS LINGUISTIC INVESTIGATION:
Set up the investigation by distributing the cards to small groups. Students sort and analyze the examples, looking for patterns in how possessive nouns are formed. You're facilitating, not explaining. They're doing the thinking.
Once groups have worked through the cards, bring the class together to compare findings. Then students complete the worksheet, writing the rules in their own words and practicing with targeted exercises. Use it as a full class lesson, a warm-up, or a collaborative project...whatever fits your context.
THIS WAS CREATED FOR YOUR ADULT ESL STUDENTS
Your beginning-level adult ESL grammar students deserve instruction that respects their intelligence. This investigation challenges them to think analytically and articulate grammatical rules. These are skills that transfer directly to reading comprehension, clear writing, accurate speaking, and understanding what they hear.
This activity also works well with secondary ESL students and secondary native English-speaking students who have gaps in their grammar knowledge.
GRAB IT AND GO
Download it, print and cut out the cards, and you've got a student-led grammar lesson ready to run. No lecture required.
