Description

This teaching PowerPoint covers 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication using the traditional multiplication algorithm WITH regrouping in the 2nd step.

I have found that teaching the traditional multiplication algorithm in stages is what has helped my students master this concept the fasted. I created my multiplication teaching PowerPoints to tackle the process one step at a time.

Why do you need this ppt when you can just throw problems up on the board and talk students through the process?

  • With this tool, you will still be talking students through the traditional multiplication algorithm with the added benefit of being able to move around the room to ensure all students are on task while checking for any misunderstandings.
  • They are also time savers because you are not stopping between each step to make sure all students are keeping up. The constant stopping makes it hard for some students to follow the process. It is too much of a distraction.
  • More time will be available to allow more group, partner, or individual practice.

There is a note/practice page available that follows the PowerPoint as well as a step-by-step guide.

These Multiplication Teaching PowerPoints are available to teach the following processes: 2-digit by 1-digit, 2-digit by 2-digit, 3-digit by 1-digit, and 3-digit by 2-digit.

“Z It Out!”

The Multiplication Teaching PowerPoints for 2-digit by 2-digit and above use a strategy that I call “Z it out!” After completing the multiplication of the first product by the ones place, a large “Z” will fly in to cross out the digit. The “Z” reminds students to place the zero in the second row. I explain to the students that placing the zero is allowed because the next step involves multiplying by the number in the tens place, and when you multiply by ten, there will be a zero at the end.
