Description

Enjoy these 3 versions of adding and subtracting rational numbers for your unit!

The 3 activities are the same problems but how the kids interact will be completely different. Gallery walk and task cards are available, but I wanted to explain that the third activity aligns with the research Peter Liljedahl completed about how vertical non-permanent surfaces enhance a student's willingness to work and think. It is simply a slides presentation that will be on the board, and the students complete the problems in groups.

*the problems include positive and negative rational numbers*

Task Cards - Gallery Walk - White Board Practice

Included also is a sheet for students to work on for the gallery walk and the task cards!

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram.
Describe situations in which opposite quantities combine to make 0. For example, a hydrogen atom has 0 charge because its two constituents are oppositely charged.
Understand 𝘱 + 𝘲 as the number located a distance |𝘲| from 𝘱, in the positive or negative direction depending on whether 𝘲 is positive or negative. Show that a number and its opposite have a sum of 0 (are additive inverses). Interpret sums of rational numbers by describing real-world contexts.
