It's ready to print, add a dice or spinner & game pieces, and use right away in your 2nd-4th grade classroom. With this game, students will solve adding 3 digit numbers problems while playing a fun, easy-to-learn board game.

This printer-friendly, low-prep resource allows your students to review three digit addition and strengthen their ability to add and subtract within 1000 while using the standard algorithm addition method.

Tips for Playing this Math Game: 

  • Read the directions to the students and model how to play. 
  • Be prepared with dice/spinner and game pieces for each player (paperclips, pencil top erasers, pieces from another game, etc.) 
  • Every student should solve every problem - not just the person who rolls.
  • Create groups of 2-4 students. The lower number of students means the more focused students are while playing.
  • Remind them the main focus is practicing three digit addition skills; the game is just the bonus!
  • Show students how to compare and discuss answers. Did you both get the same answer? If students get different answers, ask them to solve the problem using a different strategy or help coach each other through the problem.

Students will be playing a game and will often forget that they are even practicing math skills! This game allows them to play while working on adding 3 digit numbers, applying standard algorithm addition strategies, and build confidence with "add and subtract within 1000" problems. Research shows that challenge-based gamification in the classroom can lead to a 34.755% increase in student performance (ScienceDirect, 2020).

The best part? Your students quickly learn the rules and get right to work. It’s low-prep, printer-friendly, and easy to use.

Understand that in three digit addition or subtraction, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds.
