Description

This 3-Digit Subtraction Open Number Line resource gives you everything you need for your 2nd grade students to subtract 3-digit numbers on an open number line.

Three lessons are included: subtracting 10 & 100 from a 3-digit number, counting back to subtract 3-digit numbers on an open number line, and adding up to subtract 3-digit numbers on an open number line.

For each of these lessons, this resource will give you materials for direct instruction, guided practice, independent practice, assessment, and hands-on center activities. No need for spending time searching the internet. Everything you need is in this one resource!

Here's what's included for EACH lesson:

  • Display Pages: These are the landscape pages. Use these to introduce the “I can” statement and to teach the skills. Model solving the problems or have students help you.

  • Worksheets: Print these off for students. Do a couple problems together and have students do the rest by themselves.

  • Scoot Activity: Print these on card stock and cut the cards apart. Tape the problems up around your classroom. Print the recording sheet for students. Students go around and solve the problems. They write their answers on the recording page. I like to have students work with a partner to do these. This activity also works great as a center activity.

  • Sorting/Puzzle Activity: Students sort the cards on whether it is adding 10 or 100 in the equation. I also like to have students work with a partner to solve these. When students are done, I have them raise their hands and I will do a quick look over before they put them away. For the counting back number line puzzle activity, students put the little number cards on where they should fit on the number lines. You could also laminate the pages and have students use dry-erase markers to fill in the numbers underneath the number lines. For the adding up to subtract math puzzles, students put the cards together to match the number line to the equation and the answer.

  • Exit Tickets: Use these to quickly assess how students understood the lesson and concepts taught. There are 3 different versions so that students can have a different ticket than the student sitting next to them.

  • Answer Keys: Have students check their own worksheets and scoot activities with these answer keys.

This was a game changer! Due to covid absences in K and 1st, the majority of my kids had very limited exposure to number lines upon entering 2nd grade. It was starting to feel impossible when it hit me that they prob needed something that could mix hands on learning with higher order number lines and I was thrilled to find it already existed! Boy did this pack deliver… I used it in small group interventions and one by one that light bulb starting turning on!
