3 Reads Protocol

  • 1st Read (Represented by a storybook graphic): Read the story without specific numbers to focus on the details of the story and to answer the question: What is the story about?
  • 2nd Read (Represented by a numbers graphic): Read the story with the numbers to focus on answering the questions: What are the numbers in the story? How are they related? What do they mean?
  • 3rd Read (Represented by a question marks graphic): Read the story a third time and focus on answering the question: What mathematical questions can we ask about the story?

I like this resource to encourage mathematical thinking and problem solving skills. My students struggled with the patience to read the problems 3 times and did not like the strategy.
