Description

In this engaging project students design their building by first choosing 3-4 3D objects and then have to draw 2D representations of each view point of their building. They must then select the appropriate nets and convert their 2D representation onto the nets before colouring and assembling them.

This is an awesome activity for reviewing shapes, examining view points and having a lot of fun!

Included are:

♦ Instructions covering 4 lessons (2 pages)

♦ nets (6 pages)

♦ Design sheet (1 page)

♦ Reflection Sheet (1 page)

This project is best done over 3-4 lessons and aligns perfectly with Year 5 Mathematics outcome: Connect three-dimensional objects with their nets and other two-dimensional representations (ACMMG111)

The nets are offered in 'easy tab' version only to make assembly the small nets easier.

This activity can also be integrate with HASS as students can set up a small community, name it and provide it with a government and name.

I used this resource with my students and absolutely loved it. It was engaging, easy to implement, and aligned well with our lesson goals. The students were actively involved and really enjoyed the activities. I appreciated how organized and clear everything was—definitely a time-saver. I’ll be using this again!

It's a great idea. I printed the ones in the download and found even with Year 5 students they lacked the skill, but more so, perseverance (disappointingly) when making the nets. I then put students in pairs to design their building, reprinted nets in larger sizes and we had greater success. The finished products were worth the effort.
