How long will this activity take?

Time to complete will vary anywhere between 30mins - 2 hours or more! It mainly depends on how familiar your students are with the math mystery format and how difficult they find math skills covered in the particular mystery. Please check the math skills outlined in the clues above to help determine suitability for your class. I highly recommend pacing this activity by giving students one clue at a time. Once the whole class has completed a clue, then move on to the next clue, either within the same lesson or the next math session. New math content presented? Make a lesson out of it by modeling the math before diving into the clue. I like to say, "We must learn something new before attempting the next clue." There are lots of ways to implement this activity in your classroom. Learn more in the blog post link below:

Such an engaging way for students to practice their multi-digit addition & subtraction and balancing equations. I tie it in at the end of our One & Only Ivan read aloud.

Some of the third graders still have a difficult time with fact families and missing addends. This was an excellent way to review and practice while I had a sub. It was easy for the sub, the students enjoyed working together and gaining more understanding and competence through practice. Thank you for this engaging resource!

I bought this same math mystery for grades 1-3, for my high ability first graders. Some of them are identified for ELA and not math, so they're using the first grade level. Others are high flyers, with one even needing the 3rd grade version. I love that they have different levels of problems, but the clues are the same. This allows me to differentiate based on skill.
