Description

Are you looking for rigorous, standards-aligned error analysis prompts for third grade? These activities are great for test prep! The purpose of these journal prompts is to get students to develop mathematical reasoning and to practice writing in the math classroom specifically critiquing the reasoning of others.

Each prompt poses a problem where a student has made an error and has explained the reasoning behind their answer. The journal prompts asks you to identify and explain the error in the student’s reasoning.

The prompts are organized by domain and standard for ease of use according to the Common Core Standards.

These prompts are sure to address some of the common misconceptions students might have as well as to promote writing in the math classroom. They were inspired by the typical errors my students have made year after year. They are meant to be used at the end of each topic or skill rather than daily since they require full understanding of the standard being addressed.

If you are a PARCC or SBAC state, your students will surely appreciate these types of questions as they are an integral part of these new Common Core Assessments.

Each page has multiple copies of the same prompt to help make printing easier. Simply cut out the prompts and give to your students to glue into their math journals or binders.

I used these as math station activities to get students to explain their thinking more. We did a few as a class so I could demonstrate the process and then they went on to doing them independently in their math journals. I think this helped the class to stop and think about how they solve math problems
