Description

These third-grade math sketch notes (AKA doodle pages) are a powerful learning and teaching tool for models of multiplication facts (arrays, area, equal groups, number lines). They cover essential math concepts and procedures for students in a visually appealing way. You can use this resource to supplement any math curriculum, and it is perfect for previewing/pre-teaching or reviewing/reinforcing.

These sketch pages are like mini anchor charts that your students actively create and can be referred to in the future.

While these were specifically created for 3rd grade, the student materials do not have grade-level indicators, so you can use them with older students.

WHAT’S INCLUDED:

  • Blank student note page (two sizes: 8.5 × 11 & composition notebook size for INBs)
  • Detailed answer key
  • Step-by-step PowerPoint

GUIDED NOTE-TAKING

Guiding your students through the note-taking process is so easy and requires almost zero preparation!

  1. PowerPoint: Each sketch note page comes with a step-by-step PowerPoint that you can use to guide your students as they complete their notes.
  2. Document Camera: Use a document camera to project a blank copy of the notes. Use the answer key provided to complete the note page in front of your students.

WHY SKETCH?

Sketch notes present your students with a meaningful and engaging activity they will love. Doodle note-taking activates verbal and visual modalities to capture concepts. The whole brain is absorbed in hearing, synthesizing, and retaining ideas. This high level of engagement helps students retain the content and leaves little room for distraction.

This resource was engaging, easy to implement, and well-organized. My students were able to jump right in with minimal explanation, which effectively supported their understanding of the content. I appreciate how clear the directions were and how they kept students actively involved. Definitely a great addition to my classroom!

I needed something to reteach multiplication to my 6th and 7th-grade special education students who cannot remember how to do it. I love this because it gives examples of the different strategies. My students love coloring, so it kept them engaged. They seem to be learning their facts quickly. We're doing them multiple times using different equations using the I do, we do, you do method.

Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 × 7.
Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide. Examples: If 6 × 4 = 24 is known, then 4 × 6 = 24 is also known. (Commutative property of multiplication.) 3 × 5 × 2 can be found by 3 × 5 = 15, then 15 × 2 = 30, or by 5 × 2 = 10, then 3 × 10 = 30. (Associative property of multiplication.) Knowing that 8 × 5 = 40 and 8 × 2 = 16, one can find 8 × 7 as 8 × (5 + 2) = (8 × 5) + (8 × 2) = 40 + 16 = 56. (Distributive property.)
