Description
This project-based learning task has students practice multiple third grade math skills as they dive into running an aquarium.
First, students must give their aquarium a name and a motto that will appeal to their visitors.
Next, they need to design the different tanks for the exhibits. To do this, they are given either an area the tank must be or perimeter. They come up with different possibilities for what the tanks will look like, then make a decision on which tank design they think works best and put all of their tanks on the aquarium floor plan.
Students then solve a beginner logic puzzle in order to figure out which fish can live in smaller tanks together.
Then, students need to practice with multi-digit addition skills in order to fill their tanks with different types of decorations.
Students practice elapsed time by creating a schedule of events happening at their aquarium.
Finally, students practice multiplication skills by setting an admission price and figuring out how much money it will cost for different groups to visit the aquarium.
