Description

Establish a valuable problem-solving routine with these Math Journals, packed with 16 one- and multi-step math word problems each month. These word problems will get your students THINKING and WRITING. Students need to be able to APPLY their skills—in math and in the real world. To do this, students need consistent repeated practice with all kinds of novel mathematical problems.

>>> Save BIG when you buy the 10-month BUNDLE <<<

Keep math problems fresh and fun! My students really respond to these monthly problems. They are excited to complete a fresh journal each month and to keep track of their progress with a Student Log. The problems are full of fun situations and graphics. Students won't even realize they're solving increasingly complex and novel math problems.

How to Use

The word problems are versatile and can be used as a monthly pack or as individual problems. Use them in your small group rotations or as independent work. Can't fit in 16 problems a month? No problem! I've included an "alternative" student log with 12, 10, 9 or 8 problems - you decide which length journal works best for your students! The important thing is that your students are solving novel word problems throughout each month, every month. State and national tests are full of word problems!

3 Formats - Versatility and Value in one package!

Each monthly set of word problems comes in 3 formats. You choose which format works best for your classroom:

  1. POM Pages - Assemble as an independent work packet, complete with optional cover and monthly student log. Uses the RISE format.
  2. POM Strips - The same 16 monthly word problems in a cut-and-glue strip format to use in your own math notebooks.
  3. Google Slides - The same 16 word problems in Google Slides format, with one problem per slide. Access this format through a link provided in the Teacher Notes.

CONTENTS

POM Pages – an independent work packet of 16 rich word problems, some easier than others, but all guaranteed to get your kids THINKING. Each problem uses the structured RISE format--Read, Illustrate, Solve, Explain. Students show their work with pictures, models, lists, equations, etc. and then write a short paragraph explaining how they solved the problem. Lots of practice with this writing step in Grades 3 – 5 is crucial for success on state and national tests. Also included is a Student Log where students color a small image for each problem they complete, as well as an optional Packet Cover.

POM Strips – the same 16 word problems in cut-and-glue strip format to use in your own math notebooks.

Google Slides – the same problems in Google Slides, with one problem per slide, using the same RISE format Some of the slides contain moveable pieces that students can drag and drop to help them solve the problems. You can create an assignment and distribute the slides (to your students only) through Google Classroom or another file-sharing platform as long as it’s password protected. Simply click a link within the resource to access your Google Slides.

Teacher Notes – complete instructions for both the print and Google Slides versions.

RISE Poster – for display in your classroom, if desired.

Common Core Correlations Tables – each problem is aligned with one or more Common Core Standards. Monthly tables list each problem's correlation with the standards.

Scoring Rubric (optional)

Editable Template – a blank template for you to make your own word problems, if desired. This is a PowerPoint document.
