"I loved using this to teach area. My students loved the hands on approach. I like the way it was scaffold to start with hands on tiling to make sure students truly understood what area was before moving to repeated addition and multiplication. The math mats and practice pages are very helpful. "

Description

This Measuring Area Mini-unit includes both print & digital resources that will save you time as you plan your guided math lessons!

In Mini-Unit 4, students work with tiling extensively to connect the square unit with space that occupies both length and width. Tiling is connected to prior experience with repeated addition, then extended to bridge the connection between repeated addition and multiplication.

Students will also explore finding “all possible options” of rectangles with certain areas or perimeters, including working with factors and side lengths in tables.

Lessons:

Lesson 1 - Tiling with square pattern blocks and unit cubes - tie counting to repeated addition

Lesson 2 - Tiling - tie repeated addition to multiplication

Lesson 3 - Finding area with multiplication

Lesson 4 - Comparing perimeter and area, making shapes with same/different dimensions

Lesson 5 - Finding the area of rectilinear shapes

Each lesson includes the following:

  • PowerPoint Lesson: Bright, engaging digital lessons introduce and model each concept, including interactive questions and error analysis tasks to check understanding. (editable text)

  • Math Mat & Task Cards: Task cards guide students through hands-on activities designed to reinforce the concepts introduced in the Mini-Lesson. (editable questions)

  • Practice Pages: Perfect for in-class practice or homework, these activities provide plenty of support, but ask students to start demonstrating their understanding more independently.

  • Exit Tickets provide a brief snapshot of student understanding for you at the end of each math block. (editable text)

ALSO INCLUDED:

  • Quick Check (lessons 1-5 quiz with editable questions)
  • All digital options'

This was a terrific resource with activities and lessons already planned. Although there were some variances with the standards for North Carolina versus these, it was very well aligned and I was able to just not use the part that did not apply to my standards. I tried out a free standard and have since gone back and purchased other standards because it worked so perfectly.
