Science activities for every 3rd grade Next Generation Science Standard!
This bundle has it all! Students learn about climates, life Cycles, weather and forecasting, the Scientific Method, the Engineering Design Process, force and motion, magnets, and more!
Each challenge is connected to a different read aloud story.
Students conduct investigations and use engineering and science to do the following:
- Provide feedback about a solution to a weather-related problem.
- Find information to describe climates in different regions of the world.
- Show weather conditions using charts and graphs.
- Define a simple design problem that can be solved by applying scientific ideas about magnets.
- Plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence of the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on the motion of an object.
- Make observations and/or measurements of an object’s motion to provide evidence that a pattern can be used to predict future motion.
- Ask questions to determine cause and effect relationships of electric or magnetic interactions between two objects not in contact with each other.
- Determine possible solutions to problems caused by changes in the environment.
- Use information and look for patterns of traits in plants and animals.
- Explain how some organisms are able to survive better than others.
- Find evidence that traits can be influenced by the environment.
- Explain why some animals form groups.
- Explain how some organisms are able to survive better than others.

- Use data from fossils to learn about organisms.

My students and I LOVED science! It became our favorite part of our day thanks to Carly and Adam STEM! I loved how low prep it was also.
I used this with 2nd graders due to standards in Minnesota. They had a great time learning about different climate zones. I demonstrated with subtropical while they used tropical, temperate, highlands, and polar. Our State Library Services provides free databases for our residents to use. We used PebbleGo and Britannica to help us find information. After completing the project, the "globes" are displayed in my STEM room and my 3rd graders are begging to do the same activity.
I bought this as a supplement for our newly-adopted science curriculum that didn't have as many hands-on activities that were engaging for our students. My students loved these activities, especially the ones about force & motion and weather! Engaging, easy to prep and helped make the concepts more concrete for my students. Thank you for a great compilation of STEM activities!

NGSS3-PS2-1
Plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence of the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on the motion of an object. Examples could include an unbalanced force on one side of a ball can make it start moving; and, balanced forces pushing on a box from both sides will not produce any motion at all. Assessment is limited to one variable at a time: number, size, or direction of forces. Assessment does not include quantitative force size, only qualitative and relative. Assessment is limited to gravity being addressed as a force that pulls objects down.
NGSS3-ESS3-1
Make a claim about the merit of a design solution that reduces the impacts of a weather-related hazard. Examples of design solutions to weather-related hazards could include barriers to prevent flooding, wind resistant roofs, and lighting rods.
NGSS3-LS4-1
Analyze and interpret data from fossils to provide evidence of the organisms and the environments in which they lived long ago. Examples of data could include type, size, and distributions of fossil organisms. Examples of fossils and environments could include marine fossils found on dry land, tropical plant fossils found in Arctic areas, and fossils of extinct organisms. Assessment does not include identification of specific fossils or present plants and animals. Assessment is limited to major fossil types and relative ages.
