This Valentine's math activity will be the hit of your class party as students practice 3rd grade math skills with a Valentine's Day escape room game. This engaging print or digital escape room is a great Valentine's Day worksheet alternative. When the Valentine's Villain steals all of the heart-shaped candies, your class can use their knowledge of third grade math content to save the day! This digital escape room focuses on several third grade standards. The digital version of this activity can be completed by anyone with an internet connection and is fully automated by a Google Form™; there are no clues to hide or answers to check! If you are looking for a way to keep students engaged in an educational activity on Valentine's Day, then this digital escape room should do the trick! The activity is easy to implement and encourages cooperative learning. The print version of this activity includes black-and-white clues. It is low-prep, but not self-checking.

Skills used in this activity:

  • Several single-digit multiplication problems are included for students to practice fluency
  • Adding and subtracting within 1,000 with regrouping (including subtracting across zeroes)
  • Finding the missing number in single digit multiplication and division problems.
  • Interpreting a bar graph and solving a multi-step word problem associated with it.
  • Using the four operations to solve multi-step word problems
  • Multiplying single digits by a multiple of ten
  • Rounding to the nearest ten

FAQ

  • Do students need to have Gmail™ accounts for the digital version? NO! Anyone with internet access and a tablet, computer, or even phone can complete the breakout.
  • How long will this take? That is the hardest question as the answer varies depending on each classroom, student, or group. Some students with a firm grasp on the concepts covered in this escape room will be able to complete the challenge quickly (20-30 minutes), but most will take longer. The majority of students will take between 35-55 minutes. The form will not save student data, so if you are worried about your students not finishing on time, simply have them write their answers on scratch paper. They can then come back and quickly re-enter their answers and pick up where they left off.
  • Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Google Form™ or on the printable clues. The math in this activity is all standards-based.
  • Can this be used for distance learning? Absolutely! The PDF of the digital version includes detailed instructions for completing this activity for virtual learning.

Please note that the digital version of this activity requires internet access for students to complete a Google Form™ (no e-mail addresses are required). This activity will work on computers, tablets, and even phones! *Please make sure that your school district does not block Google Forms™.
