Description

This unit is an in-depth exploration of area that is closely linked to the Common Core Standards! The standards are even listed on the pages in kid friendly terms to allow students to understand what they are working on. This engaging unit is full of interactive notes, fun activities, and practice worksheets.

It includes everything you need to teach area to your students!

♦ “What is Area?” Interactive Notes:An introduction to the concept of area where

students will see how they can use it in real life and understand how to calculate area.

♦ Area Scavenger Hunt: With this hands on activity, students use estimate and discover how many tiles it takes to cover the surface of an item found around the room.

♦ Find the Rectangles: Students will discover through this cut and paste activity that certain areas can be made with several different rectangles.

♦ Area Practice Worksheets: Can be used for independent work, small or whole class settings. Students can practice finding the area of a rectangle by counting square units or multiplying the side lengths. They are also asked to draw a rectangle when given a certain area.

♦ “Strike it Rich!” Game: In partners, students will race to cover the most area of their graph paper.

♦ “Using the Distributive Property” Interactive Notes: A guided step by step instruction sheet to teach how the Distributive Property can be used to find the area of a larger rectangle.

♦ Distributive Property Practice Worksheets: Students will put their knowledge of the Distributive Property to good use to solve the area problems.

♦ “Complex Shapes” Interactive Notes: Use this sheet in a mini-lesson on finding the area of complex shapes including finding missing side lengths.

♦ Finding Area of Complex Shapes Worksheet: Follow up problems for independent or partner work.

♦ Area Word Problems: Real life area situations. A challenging word problem is included to enrich those students that need an extra challenge.

♦ Area Challenge: In this fun activity, students will pretend that they are interior designers. They will first figure out the area of each room in the house and then design the room with furniture that will fit within the area.
