Each lesson is designed to meet students where they are, providing scaffolding for those who need support and enrichment for those ready to extend their thinking. Students will explore fraction models, connect fractions and decimals, compare quantities, and apply their learning to real-world data.

Here’s what you’ll get:

Standards-aligned lessons covering:

  • 4.NS.2 – Modeling mixed numbers and improper fractions using visual fraction models such as number lines and area models; demonstrating equivalence between whole numbers and fractions
  • 4.NS.5 – Writing tenths and hundredths in decimal and fraction forms; representing decimals using words, models, standard form, and expanded form; mentally converting between common fractions and decimals
  • 4.NS.6 – Comparing decimals to the hundredths place using reasoning and visual models; recording comparisons using >, =, and < with justification
  • 4.CA.6 – Adding and subtracting fractions with common denominators using visual models; decomposing fractions into sums of unit fractions
  • 4.CA.8 – Solving real-world problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions with common denominators using models and equations
  • 4.DA.1 – Formulating questions, collecting and organizing data, and representing data using line plots, bar graphs, and frequency tables; analyzing data to solve real-world problems
  • Coming soon, will be added for free asap: 4.DA.2 – Creating line plots with fractional measurements (1/2, 1/4, 1/8) and solving problems involving fraction operations using the data displayed

Also included:

  • Pre-assessments for each standard to evaluate prior knowledge
  • Post-assessments to measure mastery and growth
  • Differentiated lesson plans for below, approaching, at, and above proficiency levels
  • Data-tracking sheets for monitoring student and class progress

Thank you for your kind words and positive feedback! I'm always so happy to hear how well the resources I created for my own classroom are working out in other classes! I have plenty of other math and reading resources, if those are something you're interested in. Tell your teacher friends!

Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by using information presented in line plots. For example, from a line plot find and interpret the difference in length between the longest and shortest specimens in an insect collection.
Explain why a fraction 𝘢/𝘣 is equivalent to a fraction (𝘯 × 𝘢)/(𝘯 × 𝘣) by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.
Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark fraction such as 1/2. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
