Your students always want to know when they are going to use math in the real world! They also love dreaming about what they will be when they grow up! This project is a great combination of these two ideas! Students get to choose a career path and see how that job uses math in the real world!
This project is perfect for fourth grade students working on application of math skills! It includes multiplication/division (OA and NBT domains), fractions (NF domain) and measurement and geometry (MD and G domains) application skills. Each project is differentiated with two different levels included. It includes single step and multi-step problems. It also shows problem solving in a variety of different contexts. It works great as an end-of-unit project for fourth grade for beginning-of-unit review project for fifth grade for each of the domains!
In this project, students choose the job that sounds most interesting to them and then they complete the project on the pages designated for that career choice. The career choices in all three bundles include: doctor/nurse, architect/builder, delivery driver, chef, baker, musician, scientist, detective, server, firefighter, small business owner and photographer. Each job includes 7 pages of fun and engaging math application practice. Each version of the project includes 32-36 pages for each level (a total of 96+ pages for each level or 288+ pages total including both levels) A description of the pages for each career is listed below:
- One page of story problems of possible math application situations for that job
- A one to two-page extended story problem task
- A two to three-page math task about a scenario someone with that job might encounter
- A two to three-page math task where the student is put into the role of that job
- A fun page where students get to take ownership of the career choice and create/design something related to their job choice
This project works great for independent practice, small groups, a distance learning project, an end-of-unit project, an early finisher option and more! At the end you can have a “career fair” where students can showcase their work in that particular career!
A description of each project included is below:
- Version 1: Multiplication and Division This project is differentiated and includes two versions so students at all levels of multiplication and division practice can be engaged in this purposeful practice! It is aligned to standards 4.OA.A.2, 4.OA.A.3, 4.NBT.B.4, 4.NBT.B.5, 4.NBT.B.6, 4.MD.A.2 and 4.MD.A.3 (with level 2 also aligned to standards 5.NBT.B.5 & 5.NBT.B.6).
- Level One includes multiplication and division with mostly single-step story problems and a few multi-step story problems. Division with one-digit divisors and multiplication of up to 4-digits by one-digit.
- Level Two includes multiplication and division with mostly multi-step story problems. Division with one and two-digit divisors. Some larger multiplication problems include (for example: 3-digit by 2-digit).
- Version 2: Fractions This project is differentiated and includes two versions so students at all levels of fraction practice can be engaged in this purposeful practice! The entire project is aligned to standards 4.NF.A.1, 4.NF.A.2, 4.NF.B.3, 4.NF.B.4, and level 2 is aligned to 5.NF.A.1 and 5.NF.A.2. Decimals are not included in this project.
- Level One: Includes fractions with denominators of halves, fourths, eights, thirds and sixths. Includes unit fractions and non-unit fractions with like denominators. Fraction multiplication includes mostly unit fractions, and fraction and mixed number addition and subtraction includes minimal regrouping.
- Level Two: Includes fractions with denominators of halves, fourths, eights, thirds, sixths and twelfths. Includes unit and non-unit fractions and both like and unlike denominators for comparisons and addition/subtraction. Includes multiplication of a whole number by a non-unit fraction and also requires regrouping for many of the fraction and mixed number addition and subtraction problems.
- Version 3: Measurement/Geometry: This project is differentiated and includes two versions so students at all levels of measurement/geometry application practice can be engaged in this purposeful practice! See the following page for a standard-alignment guide for in each section of the project.
- Level One: Mostly single-step measurement conversion, area/perimeter and angle measurement problems. Multiplication/division in problem solving up to two-digit by two-digit factors and one-digit divisors. Recognizing angles and lines of symmetry in more simple shapes.
- Level Two: Two-step and multi-step measurement conversion, area/perimeter and angle measurement problems. Multiplication/division in problem solving up to three-digit by two-digit factors and two-digit divisors. Recognizing angles and lines of symmetry in more complex shapes.
There is also a digital version included! There are Google Slides versions included which make this a great option for distance learning!
You can have student choose one career to work on for each version of the project or can also choose to have students try each project using all four career choices and decide at the end which one they liked the best!
Resources opens as ZIP files and include a printable (PDF), and a digital (Power Point) version of each resource. Google Slides versions included!
I hope your students enjoy this engaging and rigorous differentiated math projects!
