RATIONALE FOR PRODUCT CREATION:
I used other morning math products for years in an attempt to provide brain warm-ups for my kiddos. I noticed there were missing standards, inadequate progression of difficulty, and lack of story problems. In addition, four days always seemed too short for my struggling math students to grasp a concept before quizzing and moving on to other concepts, even with additional intervention. I finally decided to create my own morning math that would properly progress throughout Common Core standards, include story problems, give students plenty of time to work on focused skills, and emerge from best mathematical practices.
Common Core Standards, my knowledge of fourth grade content, and best mathematical practices guided my creation of this product. All five mathematical domains from the standards appear in a question every day. I included at least one story problem a day. The second semester story problems advance to multi-step problems, allowing for over 12 weeks of daily practice of these advanced story problems before state testing. The content is spiral, and yet appropriately builds on students’ knowledge throughout the year to encourage productive struggle and student success. In addition, my progression focuses on five skills over the course of two weeks, giving students ample time to work with the skills. There is a quiz at the end of the two-week period as well as a practice quiz at the end of the first week.
