Description
These subtraction secret code activities are aligned to grade 4 math standards and are fun and engaging way for students to practice using the standard algorithm.
Each activity presents students with a riddle. They must solve multi-digit subtraction problems in order to crack the code and reveal the answer.
WHAT'S INCLUDED?
This resource includes 2 different math riddle activities. Set A and Set B both involve subtraction up to 999,999 with different problems in each.
Each set includes:
- 12-14 subtraction problem cards
- Secret code riddle sheet
- Work page
- Answer key
- Digital version
Digital Version
The digital riddle sheets have been prepared for use through Easel. They can be assigned to students to complete on any device. This eliminates the need to print a worksheet for each student, saving ink and paper.
HOW TO USE THIS RESOURCE
To play, print out a set of subtraction cards and place them all around the room in random order.
Give each student a copy of the riddle/recording sheet and a work page.
Put on some fun thinking music and send the kids on a math hunt. They will need to find each card, solve the subtraction problem, and record the corresponding letter on their paper. If all the problems are solved correctly, the answer to the riddle will be revealed.
The work page provides space for students to solve each problem with columns for them to write the numbers in. This a helpful aid for students who have difficulty lining the numbers up correctly when using the standard algorithm.
This can be a timed or untimed activity depending on the ability of your students and how much time you have.
You can also use these activities in your math centers. Instead of placing the cards around the room, shuffle them and place them in a stack or spread face-down on the table for students to draw from.
Preparing for a sub? Instead of busy work, include one of these scavenger hunts in your sub file! It's super easy to set up and the substitute will be free to move around the room to assist students.
This resource is aligned to the following 4th grade math standards:
4.NBT.B.4
Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
