February can be a difficult month to keep students engaged. You’re in the heart of winter and often snow days and sick days make it difficult to stay with the pacing guide and also make it difficult for students to stay focused. However, there is still so much more for students to learn yet this year and many ways to keep students engaged and excited about solving math problems! These word problems are designed to be engaging and Valentine’s Day-themed to keep students engaged while reviewing and learning new skills for independent story-problem solving.
The word problems in this product all lend themselves to visual models and are very helpful for teaching other problem-solving strategies such as labelling and finding the unknown. Please encourage your students to use visual models when solving! You can use these story problems for small group instruction, early finisher activities, purposeful practice, math centers, distance learning and more!
These story problems focus on whole number multiplication and division, as well as addition/subtraction and mixed-operation story problems. It also includes multiplicative compare, measurement conversion and area/perimeter problems
These word problems are differentiated with three different versions so that you can work on problem solving skills with your students at all levels! . All three levels are aligned to standards 4.OA.A.2, 4.OA.A.3, 4.OA.B.4, 4.NBT.A.3, 4.NBT.B.4, 4.NBT.B.5, 4.NBT.B.6, 4.MD.A.2 and 4.MD.A.3 (and level 3 is also aligned to 5.NBT.B.5, 5.NBT.B.6) Use this simple guide to determine which set of problems is best for each student. Just look for the level icon at the top of each page. Students can start at the level that is most appropriate for them, or they can work their way up through all three levels!
- Single Heart: basic problem-solving skills. One and two-step word problems with multiplication and division. Concrete models can be used to solve the problems. Multiplicative compare included comparing two numbers. One-step measurement conversion and area/perimeter problems included.
- Double Heart: intermediate problem-solving skills. Multi-step word problems with multiplication and division. Bar models required to solve some problems with multiplicative compare with more than two numbers. Two-step measurement conversion and area/perimeter problems included.
- Triple Heart: advanced problem-solving skills. Challenging multi-step word problems with multiplication and division with mixed word problem structures. Multiplicative compare problems with multiple numbers being compared. Multi-step measurement conversion and area/perimeter problems included.
This resource works great during math centers, independent practice, small groups or even for distance learning!
