Let’s imagine that the year is thirty thousand BC, you trudge back to the cave with your kill strewn over your muscular shoulders. Your father approves of your hunt; he is proud of you. Your mother and sister are clad with the latest fashion (cheetah hide trimmings). Their hair is tangled, wild and unkempt. You all sit around the fire, a pot of stew bubbling away at the centre. Your siblings begin to cut off chunks of flank (the finest portions) to add to the stew.

ARE THEY THE SAME THING?
Palaeontology is basically all about studying the history of living things by looking at the fossils of plants and animals. Archaeology, on the other hand, is about studying human history by digging up and analysing human artefacts and other remains. There is an overlap between these two fields in palaeoanthropology – which is all about studying human-like fossils. So, that means that palaeontologists, not archaeologists, are responsible for digging up dinosaur bones!

Imagine you’re exploring a rocky hillside and spot something unusual sticking out of a stone – a spiral shell, a leaf imprint, or even a giant tooth! You may have just discovered a fossil, a piece of history that has been hidden for millions of years. Fossils are nature’s way of preserving clues from the past, showing us what plants and animals looked like long before humans arrived. But how do these ancient remains turn into stone? And what secrets can they reveal?
Poster 4: Rocks and the stories they tell
Rocks contain a record of the events that formed the Earth and thus of the history of the Earth. Rocks also contain records (in the form of fossils) of the creatures that lived on the Earth over the course of its history – from the most primitive one-celled organisms to the powerful dinosaurs. Rocks have amazing stories to tell to those who understand them. The science of Geology is the key to unlocking this treasure trove of information.
Poster 5: Geodes, rocks with a hidden crystal surprise!
Geodes are normally spherical stones which are partially hollow. On the outside it looks like a normal rock, but inside it is lined with sparkling mineral crystals or concentric layers of minerals. Sounds complicated, but it’s basically a hollow rock that is filled with shiny crystals! There are a few different ways which geodes can form, but we will only look at one of them – the volcano way.
