Description

Here is a quick and easy guide for students and parents so they can independently solve problems involving adding and subtracting fractions!

I use this in my classroom towards the end of a chapter of GOMath to help students with preparing for the chapter test. This can also be used as an anchor chart or a guide for parents. Parents love when I send these home so that they can help with the material.

This common core resource contains 1 study guide for various strategies for place value and multiplying decimals. The standards that are addressed with this study guide are 5.NF.1 and 5.NF.2.

Wondering where to use this study guide? Check out this blog post.

Explain why a fraction 𝘢/𝘣 is equivalent to a fraction (𝘯 × 𝘢)/(𝘯 × 𝘣) by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.
Understand addition and subtraction of fractions as joining and separating parts referring to the same whole.
Decompose a fraction into a sum of fractions with the same denominator in more than one way, recording each decomposition by an equation. Justify decompositions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model. Examples: 3/8 = 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8; 3/8 = 1/8 + 2/8; 2 1/8 = 1 + 1 + 1/8 = 8/8 + 8/8 + 1/8.
