Description

This is a comprehensive curriculum that can be used as your core math unit or as a supplement to a district curriculum. The decimal unit addresses the following standards, NBT. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7. (Reading, writing, rounding, comparing, adding, subtracting, and understanding the powers of ten for decimals).

Week 1: Place Value and Reading/Writing Decimals

Week 2: Power of Ten and Exponents

Week 3: Comparing and Rounding Decimals

Week 4: Adding Decimals

Week 5: Subtracting Decimals

5 Summative Assessments

The structure of the unit is the same each day, which helps your students to establish a consistent routine for the year. The protocol is as follows:

Discussion of math routines and norms

Warm-up (context word problem)

Exploration into mini-lesson

Mini-Lesson

Independent/Partner Practice

There are also slides created for math center rotations. The protocol is as follows (they can be used in many different ways):

Math Rotations:

Rotation Schedule

Math Multiplication Game (requires only playing cards)

At Your Seat Work (Review of what was taught prior to math rotations)

Tech Time (Recommendations in Unit)

The unit includes 5 SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS, but you can use the independent practice for formative assessments. We hope you find these units to be very effective for your students!

I love the fact that the unit is divided up by days. I also enjoyed that the standards are listed. Lastly, the games are wonderful. It is not totally what I was looking for, I was looking for something that provided more modeling of the concepts. I would have also enjoyed having the answer keys available to save some time. Thank you.

Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left.
Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. Use whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10.
