Description
This engaging 5th Grade Math Desmos Card Sort activity is designed to introduce and develop students' ability to the classify quadrilaterals. Students will learn/review important vocabulary and properties of quadrilaterals such as pair, parallel, right angles, quadrilateral, square, rectangle, parallelogram, trapezoid, and rhombus, fostering their use of grade-level academic language in geometry.
- They sort cards into groups that form a match, which involves higher-level thinking. Each match should contain the correct definition, picture, and other characteristics listed, each of which is on an individual card.
- Students apply their learning by drawing (digitally) a specific quadrilateral given a description. They also critique the reasoning of two claims and explain their reasoning.
- Students rate their understanding of the lesson, a practice that, according to John Hattie's research, accelerates student learning.
- The standards stem from 5th grade; however, students in grades 6 - 8 may benefit since middle school students can often use the reinforcement.
Standards:
1. Classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties. Understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category. For example, all rectangles have four right angles and squares are rectangles, so all squares have four right angles.
2. Classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on properties.
