Description

Number talks are a powerful way for your students to build number sense and fact fluency. Traditionally, number talks consist of presenting a problem and having students solve it in different ways - but these math talks will take your routine to an entirely new level. Not only will your students be working with different types of problems, but they will be presented with powerful visuals and models that they will work with in strategic ways. This will build critical thinking skills and flexibility.

This is a completely DONE-FOR-YOU resource with NO prep involved. Simply choose a number talk slide, project it, and discuss - then get ready to see your math conversations transform!

During this number talk routine, students will share and reflect on each others’ strategies. They will learn that math is not all about right answers - it is about thinking flexibly and strategically! As you continue this routine, your students’ math confidence with soar and they will learn to look at problems differently than they have in the past.

This math talk resource was created with the following philosophies in mind:

  • Math is about more than a correct answer. It is about flexible and strategic thinking and the ability to reason.
  • Focusing on different ways of thinking should be a priority.
  • Students benefit from discussing their own strategies and considering the strategies of others.
  • There is no one right way to solve a problem.

This resource includes two-hundred daily math conversation prompts for your number talk routine. Use one per day as a math warm-up to encourage flexible and strategic thinking. These are delivered to you in Google Slides™ format, but can be saved as a PowerPoint and presented that way.

A printable PDF version is also included. This can be used in small group math settings, or posted on a bulletin board as a weekly math challenge or exit ticket activity.

The first 50 days of this resource include less difficult concepts. As the days go on, more difficult concepts are incorporated.

Here's what other teachers are saying about Math Conversations:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "This resource transformed my daily number talks and enhanced student learning. We used a slide each day to open our math block and students enjoyed discussing their ideas and strategies and answers. Ready to go!"

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "I use these for my daily number routines. My students have to think and feel more confident when they know they can't be wrong, as long as they explain their reasoning based on the things they see."

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "I love this resource!!! I use it every day and the students are actively excited about the questions! Thank you thank you thank you!!!"

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "One of my favourite resources I have bought. It is great for morning math tasks to get my math lessons started. I like the ease of copying and pasting the slides into my daily routines."

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "I love how these incorporate different types of number talks but all in one place! We use a slide each day at the start of class and my students LOVE them. I also appreciate that these number talks provide entry points for ALL students, regardless of where they are at in their learning."

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "This is one of the best resources I have purchased through TPT. Shelley's resources are always top-notch, but this one, in particular, I use almost daily. It's easy to keep track of which slides you have used, and easy to embed into your program. They support the curriculum, but more than that they support math learning for so many kids at different levels of understanding. I love how they scaffold concepts and strategies. Excellent. Can't recommend more!"
