Description

This bundle includes 6 thin-slice problem sets designed to help students build fluency with rational number operations and one-step equations through a highly engaging, collaborative routine.

Each thin-slice set is intentionally designed to start simple and gradually increase in difficulty, allowing students to self-pace while still working toward the same learning standard.

This structure naturally provides built-in differentiation: students who are ready to move faster can do so, while others gain confidence from the progression of problems. All students remain engaged, talking through strategies, checking their work, and developing mathematical reasoning.

Inspired by classrooms that use vertical non-permanent surfaces and collaborative problem solving, this resource is low-prep, high-engagement, and easy to implement.

What’s Included (6 Sets)

  1. Adding rational numbers
  2. Subtracting rational numbers
  3. Multiplying and dividing rational numbers
  4. One-step equations with positive numbers
  5. One-step equations with addition & subtraction using rational numbers
  6. One-step equations with multiplication & division using rational numbers

Each set moves from easy β†’ more challenging (integers β†’ decimals β†’ fractions) problems to build confidence and fluency.

Why Teachers Love This Routine

  • Built-in differentiation without extra prep
  • Encourages math discussion and reasoning
  • Promotes active learning on vertical whiteboards
  • Simple materials: problem cards + one marker per group
  • Students remain engaged because everyone participates
  • Easy to reuse throughout the year for spiral review or targeted practice

Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract rational numbers.
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division and of fractions to multiply and divide rational numbers.
Understand that integers can be divided, provided that the divisor is not zero, and every quotient of integers (with non-zero divisor) is a rational number. If 𝘱 and 𝘲 are integers, then –(𝘱/𝘲) = (β€“π˜±)/𝘲 = 𝘱/(β€“π˜²). Interpret quotients of rational numbers by describing real-world contexts.
