Description

This 15 page common core aligned project is a great way to tie together all of the major work of the 6th grade. Students build their own store and sell their own product. I had students work in pairs to complete this project, but you can choose to make it independent or even group.

The project is broken up into 7 parts. The last part being a reflection piece. Aside from working to create a store, each part also includes a 'practice' section for generic math problems that have to do with that part of the project. These practice questions can be assigned as part of the project, or can be used as independent practice that you assess daily.

The parts look as follows:

Part 1: What does your store look like? (Graphing polygons on the coordinate plane, finding the distance between 2 points, breaking up figures to find the area)

Part 2: Make $$$ (creating equations, ratio tables, independent/dependent variables, graphing equation, simplifying expressions & solving one step equations)

Part 3: What if..? (writing, solving, and graphing inequalities)

Part 4: Packaging your item (finding volume including mixed numbers)

Part 5: Shipping your item (finding surface area by breaking up figure)

Part 6: Sale Day (percent discount, and finding the whole, the part, or the percent

Part 7: Reflection questions

You can assign pieces of this project throughout the year and keep in a portfolio, or you can assign it as one big project at the end of the year. Rubric is provided for grading.

I have used portions of this to help some of my students who struggle with tests to show what growth they have made. Most of the students find it helpful and less stressful than the regular tests.

Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
Find the volume of a right rectangular prism with fractional edge lengths by packing it with unit cubes of the appropriate unit fraction edge lengths, and show that the volume is the same as would be found by multiplying the edge lengths of the prism. Apply the formulas 𝘝 = 𝘭 𝘸 𝘩 and 𝘝 = 𝘣 𝘩 to find volumes of right rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
Draw polygons in the coordinate plane given coordinates for the vertices; use coordinates to find the length of a side joining points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate. Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
