Description

This bundle of low-prep, high-impact projects for 6th grade math combine creativity with rigorous, standards-aligned practice. Each project is designed to keep the class focused, wrap up a unit topic, and offer an engaging alternative to traditional review. Covering essential topics like ratios, equations, geometry, statistics, fractions, and the coordinate plane, this is a flexible, classroom-tested collection you can use all year long!

Each project includes clear instructions, teacher guides, and everything you need to run an engaging math lesson that lasts 2–3 full class periods.

What's included: 10 PROJECTS.. & GROWING!

  • Running a Circus — write algebraic expressions from real pricing rules, solve one-step equations, graph inequalities, and build a 3D pop-up tent diorama (6.EE)
  • Island Paradise Statistics — analyse real resort data using histograms, dot plots, box plots, mean, median, MAD, and distribution descriptions (6.SP)
  • Coordinate Plane Project — plot ordered pairs, apply reflections, and navigate all four quadrants to build a hand-drawn Wonderland map (6.NS / 6.G)
  • 6th Grade Geometry PBL Project — calculate area, perimeter, surface area, and volume in the context of designing a real zoo (6.G)
  • Shape Up the Farm — calculate the area of triangles, trapezoids, and parallelograms applied to real farm design challenges (6.G)
  • Tessellations Project — apply translation, reflection, and rotation to design and create an original tessellating art piece (6.G)
  • Factor Garden — build factor trees, identify prime factors, and find GCF through a creative illustrated poster project (6.NS)
  • Fraction Operations — Crazy Cat Café — apply fraction operations in the real-world context of running a café menu and managing orders (6.NS)
  • Distributive Property Poster Project — demonstrate understanding of the distributive property through a creative maths poster (6.EE)
  • Food Truck Project — apply ratios, unit rates, proportions, and scale in the context of designing and pricing a food truck menu (6.RP)

Every project has a creative component and includes a complete answer key, teacher instruction page, and grading rubric.

Why it works!

  • Real World - Students aren't just completing a worksheet — they're running a business, managing a resort, enhancing animal enclosures, designing a space, planning a menu.
  • Creative & Hands-on - I believe students connect better with math concepts if they can see, feel, and manipulate! You will find a hands-on and/or creative component to most projects.
  • Covers every major 6th grade domain. Ratios, number system, expressions and equations, geometry, and statistics
  • No time for heavy prep - Each project requires little to no prep. Print & go!

Classroom tested across 6th grade at varying ability levels. The themed contexts sustained engagement across the full project length in ways that standard worksheets don't — and the variety of creative outputs kept students motivated from the ratios unit all the way through to after state testing. Have a closer look at each individual project in the preview files!
