Description
This resource is a collection of worksheets with a variety of problems focused on the common core standard 7. EE.A.1: “Apply properties of operations as strategies to add, subtract, factor, and expand linear expressions with rational numbers”.
The document mostly focuses on critical thinking exercises that are categorized by the following skills:
- Translating phrases into algebraic expressions (Ex: “If 2(3x - 2) is increased by triple of 2x + 4.5, then what will be the double of the simplified expression?”)
- Finding the additive inverse (or opposite) for the given expression (“What should be added to (1/3) (15x - 1.5) to get the additive inverse of -3.2x - 5.8”?
- Combing like terms with decimal and fractional coefficients.
- Using distributive property to simplify algebraic fractions.
- Writing an expression as a product of two factors.
- Finding the sum of the next three or four (or the previous three or four) even or odd quantities if the previous odd or even quantity is represented by an expression (“If x + 4 is an even number in the sequence, what is the sum of the previous four even numbers?”)
- Finding the sum of the peoples ages in the future or in the past if the sum of their present ages is represented by expression.
- Finding the missing length of the line segment in the form of an algebraic expression if the line segment is subdivided into parts.
- Finding the expression for the missing angle if angle is subdivided into smaller angles.
- Finding perimeter of the composite shapes (multiple examples with stacked shapes)(“Three identical squares with a side 3x + 2 are stacked on top of one another. What is the simplified expression for the perimeter of the entire shape?”)
The document includes:
- Relevant terminology
- Modeling of the most difficult problems
- 19 worksheets with 128 problems
- Answer key
