Description

Around the Town is an excellent activity to help your students practice one-step and multi-step word problems. It is a fun activity to review many math concepts throughout the school year. Around the Town can also help your students prepare for standardized testing.

Students will have a great time exploring the town and solving word problems. Each word problem is missing specific information that students can find on nine informational sheets located throughout the town. Some problems will direct students to specific locations, while others will require them to figure out the location based on clues in the word problem. “Around the Town” is a fantastic activity to incorporate throughout the school year.

Included in this product:

Minimal preparation is needed for this activity.

  • 67 word problems - 16 pages - Most word problems align with 3rd-grade CCSS. (See the preview for the list of standards.)
  • 9 locations (buildings) and 9 informational sheets. Available in both color and black/white.
  • Answer Keys - For each word problem, the answer keys provide the location of the missing information and the steps needed to solve the problem. The answer keys will help you plan your lessons.
  • Suggestions on how to complete the activity with your class.
  • An additional fun idea on how to keep your students motivated while solving word problems.

Here are some sample problems.

The owner of the Coffee Shop, Miss Bee, and the owner of the General Store, Mr. Wilson, are getting married. They want to have their reception at the Fire Station. To seat all their guests, they need a room with a perimeter of at least 42 meters. Will the fire hall be large enough for their wedding? (The students go to the Fire Station to find the dimensions of the fire hall.)

The Johnson family attended the Showing 1 movie on Friday. If 2 adults and 3 children attended the movie, what was the total cost of the tickets? What time did the movie start? (The students go to the Movie Theater to find the cost of the tickets and to read an analog clock for the movie time.)

George and Frank entered a jelly bean contest at the Candy Store. They had to guess how many jelly beans were in the small jar. George guessed 43 and Frank guessed 89. Which boy had the closest guess? (The students go to the Candy Store and read a picture graph to find the number of jelly beans in a jar.)

Three boys want to buy six packs of fidget spinners. If the boys divide the total cost of the spinners equally, how much will each boy pay? (The students go to the General Store to find the cost of a pack of fidget spinners.)

Maria and her friends are hungry for ice cream. They take 3 cars to the Ice Cream Shop. There are 2 people in each car. Each person will eat an ice cream sundae. How many total scoops will Maria and her friends eat at the Ice Cream Shop? (The students go to the Ice Cream Shop to find out how many scoops are needed to make an ice cream sundae.)
