These leveled core boards are versatile low-tech AAC options with the same motor plan for early communicators, minimally, & non-speaking students. Use to provide visual support in speech and language therapy, the classroom, and at home. Visual cue cards are great for your core words of the week display and the handouts are perfect for teachers, aides, & caregivers!

Resource Includes:

1. Leveled Core Boards

  • Four versions with 15, 20, 25, 30 words vocabulary sets
  • Icons/words are in the same place so you can keep the same motor plan
  • Color coded: pronouns (yellow), verbs (green), wh questions (pink), purple (prepositions), white (little words)
  • One 30 icon board with all white backgrounds (no color coding)

2. Visual Cue Cards

  • 30 visual cue cards - one for each word on the full core board
  • Great for "Core Word of the Week" displays/bulletin boards
  • Use to cue during activities like reading a story
  • Place them around the classroom to create a language rich environment (e.g. "go" on the door, "eat" on the snack table, "drink" on the water fountain, etc.)

3. Core Words Handout

  • Great for families, teachers, & classroom aides
  • Short description of core words
  • Short explanation of how to use a core board
  • Examples of core word phrases for different communicative functions (e.g. negation, commenting, requesting, questions)
  • Two versions - one with core words in the phrases bolded and one without

4. Self Advocacy Cards

  • This is my voice + 5 statements
  • Add them to the back of the student's core board prior to laminating

  • Providing aided language stimulation the classroom or during speech and language therapy
  • Visuals for formulating sentences
  • Modeling core words during play, activities, reading books, group activities
  • Students who are minimally speaking, non-speaking, and situationally non-speaking
  • Students with low intelligibility or Selective Mutism
  • Preschoolers or early communicators who would benefit from visual support
  • Send home for families to model with

Great temporary substitute for AAC device. I have many students that communicate with a device. This core board is great to have handy if a child doesn’t have access to their words (low battery or forgotten at home). It’s cute, engaging, and easy for anyone to navigate.
