Talking about Essay Types in AP Language & Composition

Hi, Friends!

Are your students a bit panicky right now? Help calm student nerves and add this handout into your routine RIGHT AWAY! IN FACT, go ahead and let students use this sheet as they get used to the idea that they'll be writing THREE back-to-back essays in May. Add this to your lesson plan—and then keep the inclusion consistent! Have a discussion about each essay type. AP Language & Composition students in Semester 1 (especially) are a bundle of nerves: essay types AND they’re timed?! There isn’t a bandaid; but there’s a way to think about them!

I copy the "Three Essay Types--Structures and Strategies on heavy card stock paper and then laminate them. Then I put two copies in each table's handout holder for students to reference all year long as they tackle in-class essays. (After my last year’s Language & Composition students advanced to Literature & Composition, they asked their teacher if she wouldn't consider laminated handouts for their reference as well because they had internalized so many strategies!) Another useful way to use these handouts is to copy one for students and allow them to use them as they write in-class essays throughout the school year!

You might also want this companion: “Vary Your Verbs & Sentence Structure” and the "Language Rhetorical Choices, Features & Effects, Essay Organization, Planning" study sheets, culminating from constant discussions with my students about sentence structures, predictable and stale verbs and those ever illusive big effects!

This was very helpful for my AP Language & Composition students while they were preparing for the AP Language Exam. It is a great review handout for each of the essays that they are to write for Rhetoric classes in college.
