Description
This is actually a bundle because it includes all of the products you need for the entire unit. All parts of this resource are highly detailed. It could be given completely as an independent unit/project for students to experience remotely, or it could be covered together in class. 1-2 weeks.
✧50 Slides: All of the introductory information on Story-Based Fragrance Marketing. Brief history up through the process of creating fragrance, scientific bits about olfactory bonding, perfume & cologne ads, etc.
✧Anticipatory handout (35 "question" activity to get students metaphor-making ready)
✧5 Linked non-fiction article readings
✧AP Style Multiple Choice "quiz" & key on one of the article readings (12 questions)
✧Linked handout on the Common Ingredients and Terms used in Fragrances & Marketing
✧The student project, with all the details AND Detailed Rubric (specific categories & examples) on how they will create and market their own fragrance to the class (in the form of a presentation).
✧Linked handout on using strong verbs to enhance writing
In making this unit, I wanted to create a fresh way for students to analyze rhetoric and to produce an authentic writing-based project that would also be a demonstration of the skills needed to get the sophistication point on the AP essays. We've worked on the technical organization and structure of essay writing all year. In this unit, students are also practicing making their own Aristotelian appeals. With all of the non-fiction linked reading, they are getting further paced practice in gleaning text for meaning and strategy. I like that this project ensures student ownership in all of the choices they will make in their creation.
See my full year of College-Board approved detailed AP Language course content (Syllabus Here), which is 16 pages, ultra-detailed, aligned with all anchors and includes all content links so it is fully remote. I also include the College Board code number, so that you can claim the syllabus and implement it in your class.
I organize my AP Lang year into 8 clear units (about 2 per marking period), while effusively covering the 9 main College-board assigned curricular topics.
Some of my AP Lang resources are:
AP Lang Rhetoric of Science unit is Here.
AP Lang Rhetoric of Art unit is HERE.
AP Lang Power of Speeches unit is Here.
AP Lang practice prompt with a detailed walk through is HERE.
AP Lang close reading of text with answer key is HERE
AP Lang Civil Rights unit is Here.
AP Lang Rhetorical Analysis of Amanda Gorman's poem is HERE.
AP Lang unit on the Power of Words in Letters is Here.
AP Lang Rhetorical Terms test with included key is HERE.
We use my 75 question critical viewing guide as we watch The Phantom of the Opera and students learn to analyze the rhetoric of both film and lyrics Here: (Key included!)
Here is another unit for learning how to closely analyze rhetoric in both non-fiction and poetry. Why study poetry in AP Lang? Ultimately, as I remind students, it's often the beautifully figurative language that makes non-fiction pieces and speeches so powerful.
If you like using songs to teach ELA, I've created a full course elective I call "The Literature of Music" in a growing bundle here or you can check out some of the individual units linked below:
