Description

NEW for 2020! This resource now includes a fully editable Google Doc link for remote or distance learning! Assign the Google doc to your students, and they can type their answers directly into the boxes and submit their work digitally.

This packet includes the following:

  • Seven probability questions that use football quarterback pass completion rate, and require the use of the following probability techniques to answer:

· Geometric PDF · Geometric CDF · Complement of Geometric CDF · Binomial PDF · Binomial CDF · Complement of Binomial CDF · Normal Approximation for Binomial Model

  • Space for students to show work for each question
  • Reflection to compare real outcome of game to calculated probabilities
  • Answer key with worked out solutions

Aligned to AP Statistics curriculum! Engage your students with this mini project that asks them to apply binomial and geometric probability theory to football. Simply fill in each year the pass completion rate and a picture of a quarterback, and you are good to go! The version uploaded is from 2017, featuring Matt Ryan. I am selling as a Word doc and a Google Doc so you can edit for this year - and it doesn't even have to be football! Can adjust to work for basketball, tennis, even baseball. Also includes answer key with work shown!

I assign this each year for homework over the "Big Game" weekend. My kids love to discuss their findings on Monday.

My favorite part about this project is that when we review probability even months later, kids will often remember the difference between binomial and geometric probability in the context of this project. It creates a memorable application of these tricky concepts that really helps make them stick!

My students found it very helpful to have to write out why it was binomial or geometric. This was a great activity!

This has a nice application, especially if doing it during football season. It would also be adaptable to other sports.
